the mounting is the same as any boggo pinto, but the current rating is higher for extra ancillaries like front fogs, heated windscreen etc.

4x4 went to a poly-vee belt drive rather than the twin belt of the 2wd models.

So if I have a 1990 Sierra Cosworth 4x4, can I put a standard Ford Sierra alternator ? Mine is dead.

you can. you may have to change the pulley over, and it probably wouldn't last very long if you put full load into it (used all of your electrics like headlights, heater motor, radiator fans) as you would be trying to get more current from it than it can produce. you can't damage anything except the alternator itself though, unless your fuel pump also gets a low voltage due to too much current draw and then you could melt the engine as the pump won't be able to supply enough fuel.

best get a proper one eh?

Yes I guess so. I'm trying to watch around me to see if I can get one, but 1 door has been closed today unfortunetly. Some still are open and I'm waiting, but I can't wait to hear again the sound of my catalysed Cossie !

it could be Al. all you need is the right mounting and the right current capability (90A on a 4x4). some look the same but aren't quite as the front housing is 90 degrees out, but that can be rectified by unbolting it (if you can get them undone - impact drive usually necessary), and you can swap pulleys over.
