Stuart Sharpin, aka SCROTE has done this, you may get hold of him easier on bluecossie.com/rsnorfolk, where Retro Al lives who has done it to a mk1.

hello. iv done this 2 my mk1, its not 2 hard 2 be honest if ur ok with a welder. the hardest bit was fitting a larger gearbox tunnel 4 the t5 box. all u need is a world cup crossmember, rs2000 engine mounts and either use the t5 gearbox mount of fabricate ur own. thats ur engine and gearbox inplace.
next is to sort ur radiator and intercooler out, i used a radtec set up designed 4 the mk1/mk2. just trim ur old rad panel down. little tip tho.. change cambelt when engine is out or it a pain in the arse. then if ur ok at wiring the rest is easy. i got sum 1 to wire mine up 4 me. just 1 more tip.. please dont try and save money when it comes 2 ur axle. get the best u can affored. i learned thru experience. go 4 an atlas, iv got an axle off a jenson on mine its been bullet proof so far... gud luck.. let me no how u get on

You also need to account for some serious suspension mods. No good having all that power if you cant put it down. The shell will also need strengthening.
