Default Cossie not sparking

ok, my mate just bought a escort cossie

it's running l6,

was running ok, then stalled now wont start, the fuel pumps stopped priming, so he run a constant live to them, still nothing

now he's found out there's no spark

but last night he went out in the garage and it was sparking, but couldn't try to start as the battery was flat

now today he's gone to look again and there's no spark.

any ideas???

would this be an ECU fault??

or a sensor? like the phase sensor or crank???

any help greatly appreciated

If the phase sensor is knackered it will run without one (not well ,but it will run) if you just unplug it, so thats easy to rule out.
