Default Alternator Q ?

hi guys

alternators packed up on a 1.8 xr3i 130ps

been offered for free a good workin order 1.6 fiesta zetec alternator

ok same engine but are they the same alternators throughout ?

All you need to check is the charging rate of the alternator, probably 70A at a guess, should be a sticker on there with the rating

It depends if the Fiesta as of a similar age. At some point Ford changed it all so the ECU managed the charging rate so it is not always simple.

Really?

So the ECU handles 70 odd Amps of charging current to the battery

No, the ECU will stop the alternator charging in certain conditions.

This sort of thing is going to get worse as the EU want to reduce engine idle speeds lower and lower because of emissions.

ok confused, lol i thought an alternator is an alternator and can only charge with the belt etc

the alternator i got to put on is a m plate fiesta 1.6 si one and the car in question is a 130 ps xr3i 16v zetec 1.8 ?

yet to be taken of the car to check if there the same size etc yet ? or any difference

Ignore the comment about the ecu controlling the charge thats not relevant to a car as old as yours.

As i said above check the current rating of the unit, even if it fits it will stil work but its best to have one of the same rating ideally, if its lower it may struggle when you load it up.
