Default Escort 1.6 or 1.8 Diesel?

I want to buy cheap runner for everyday as my RST drinks too much . Have on mind MK4 escort with 1.6 or 1.8 diesel engine. What are the viewes on them? Which engine is better? more economic, more reliable? Al I know is that power is almost the same 54Hp for 1.6 and 60Hp for 1.8 ... Technicaly what are the differences between those two engines... maybe only the bore?

1.6 stats are bore + stroke 80mm X 80mm, 1608cc, CR 21.5:1, max power 54bhp@4800rom, torque 70lbft@3000rpm
1.8 stats are bore + stroke 82.5mm X 82mm, 1753cc, CR 21.5:1 , max power 60(PS)@4800rpmm torque 81lbft@ 2500rpm.
These are for non turbo 1.8, 1.6 never turboed, turbo 1.8 is as follows, 88-90PS@ 4500rpm, torque 130-132lbft@2000rpm.
Essentially the same enngine as 1.6, the 1.8 has oil jets to cool pistons underside externally mounted oil pump driven by auxillary shaft, TWO TOOTHED belts driving cam,oil pump shaft, water pump and the other one the fuel injector pump..

If you have a LUCAS(CAV) pump on the front of it you will find a large HEXAGON SHAPED NUT/COVER behind this is the GOVERNOR!!
This has a lock nut(10mm) undo it and turn the plate clockwise to increase fuellling but only a minute amount as very sensitive, then lock off again and try it, it will get to a point where it just causes extra smoke just back off a bit from here.
Also try some MILLERS DIESEL CLEANER, you won't beleive the crap that comes out.

Same basic engine, but detail differences on the 1.8 which make it better, it is a cronky lump of a engine but long lived and very tough.
I have seen them with over 300,000 miles on them if looked after, if not cam can seize, and a host of other problems.
Interestingly when I was away and needed the tappets doing FORD dealers would not do it!!, they said "NOT THAT EASY MATE, SPECIALIST JOB", what muppets(3 diff ford garages), just did it myself when got home, easy job to do, used a peugeot shims as they were the same size only needed to buy two as others swapped which is fine as they rotate in use and wear evenly, due to offset of cam on shim.
1.8 just as good most likely better, why they still used it on mk1/2 mondeo/escort etc.

Are there any weak points I should look at (there could be some very expensive or hard to find parts) as I'm about to purchase one of those

Just make sure if you can that you see it started from cold as if it has low compression it will be a shit to start, and obviously no good.
I personally disbeleive all service history, and just treat it to a mega service when bought if any good.
Make sure you do the PUMP belt as often it isd overlooked and people tend to do only the cam belt, filter head diapgragms split but are cheap for new filter heads(Ł25ish) make sure it does NOT smoke, only a puff when it starts(black) any blue it's burning oil etc, just usuall checks really they are fairly bullet proof.
Gearboxes can suffer as ford used ATF in them originally, good for MPG bad for life of box, and normally no drain plug on box either.

I used to get 44mpg, and 97mph thrashing mine all day every day, with std pump settings, no go at all really.
With modded pump I got 55mpg and 108mph aal day everyday, I assume it was down to engine making more torque, still burnt out the crap clutch going up hill in ROBIN HOODS BAY though!!, due to cowboy having fitted it with oil on plate.

The DIESEL Gearbox is defo different, TO PETROL as it has much different ratios, BUT is NOT ANY STRONGER.
Don't know about the clutch.

Hm, I know that people put diesel boxes to RSTs and say that they are stronger
Anyway I found one 1.8diesel with box that has some problems, so I thought maybe I could use one of petrol boxes I have as spare

The 1800 is not as easy as the 1600 when it come to changing timing belts. I can do the 1600 in about an hour it is just one belt. Also I to had great fun with tappets, but once you have the tool easy job.
My old 1600 is now on the third time around the clock and other than beig temprmental she more or less runs okay still, great little engine, but do need to use the gears to keep speed up on drawn out climbs. I have took her over on the continent a few times and on long runs over there she dose 74 to the gallon. Buy one. Cheers diesel combi pete
