to your 1st Question yes you can(once heads off) to the 2nd Question no you cant(how would you clamp the rings)!

You can't remove the pistons from the bottom of most blocks anyway as there is usually a step at the end of the bore!
If you take the head and the sump off then you can do it in situ without removing the block etc?
