Mk3 Escorts have always been prone to this, particularly on the back doors for some reason, but you don't need to worry about those
It's unlikely that your car has the original system still fitted as mk3 escorts didn't have a solenoid in the drivers door - just a switch. This meant that if you fitted remote locking the drivers door wouldn't work.
Someone has probably got around this by fitting motors from a Mk4 Escort, and this is probably out of adjustment as they take a bit of fiddling with. Take off the door panel and have a look at the rod that connects the motor to the latch, it probably needs shortening slightly and bending it slightly might be sufficient.

lol no I've done it loads of times, - I've always found the motors work so much better than the solenoids. Although I must admit they take a lot of fiddling with to get right.
My 85 cabriolet even had the screw holes for the motors in the doors, although not the ones for the electric window motors unfortunately...

MarkN your mad thats mega work, especially seeing as you have to discard the relay from under the glove compartment and re-wire it all!
If you look into it its actually easier to fit a proper MK3 solenoid onto the lock in the drivers door.
And just for the record, the reason they go stiff is lack of maintenaince, my 85 Orion has never had the door cards off and every lock works perfectly. Solenoids are a lot stronger than the motor driven items today.
You were lucky with your cabby, mine is one of the very first 84 models, no holes for anything! But i still fitted a full set of electric windows, mirrors and central locking!
