is the charging warning light lit when ignition is switched on? Does it go out when the engine is running? What voltage do you get measured across the battery when the engine is running?

if the light comes on with ignition and stays on, then it IS an alternator problem.

basically did what you did. Cleaned the earths and noticed that some of the smaller brown wires earthed to the body werent connected so crimped some new ones. Would imagine those small brown ones were a co-incidence but still like to think it worked lol

I did change alternator too!

hutchyotb, i hope you get this before you get a recon alternator, check the thin blue wire running to the alternator first, could be as simpleas that being broken

AND if its not that, it will cost about Ł20 to fix your old alternator, much cheaper than paying Ł100+ for a new one

As the Chav said...check out the blue wire....it runs along the front subframe up to the starter motor and is very common to fail. The amount of fiestas/orions/escorts that the likes of the AA and RAC used to bring into me for alternator or batteries that they had diagnosed that only needed a minor repair to said blue wire If onyl it was as simple as that on modern stuff eh
