Got in the cossy this morning, checked water, and oil; Oil was fine, but water was a little low, so i put some more water in, as you do............
started the car.............. let her warm up and off i went home.

Got about half way home, from wales, and suddenly the temp gauge shoots up off the red, I stopped as soon as i could. opened the bonnet, as you would expect, very hot, checked pipes, and water, nothings really looked strange or obvious.

Any ideas what it could be?

There are no real tell tail signs of anything.

could be the thermostat not opening

 

how low was the coolant level ?
