Default s2 rst inlet manifold query

ok, here is my inlet manifold:

looks all normal to me, but then looking through some pictures of other peoples engines, i cudnt help but notice that other inlets seem to have an extra connector on the right hand side, as shown in the red circle in the following picture:

its a green connector, and fits below where the brake vacuum pipe attaches to the inlet.

wot does this connector do?? and why does my inlet not have this connection? my car in an rs conversion so iv never really noticed this before, but upon checking other engine pics, some rs turbos have it, some dont.

any ideas?? should i be worried??

isnt an s1 inlet spose to be a split design, where u can remove the top half of the inlet, for whatever reason u wud want to do that?? lol. like this:

thats what i always assumed an s1 manifold looked like, and as my inlet is a complete 1 piece item, i figured it was a normal s2 manifold??? im well confused now

and what the hell is a knock sensor? lol should i have 1? sould i be needing 1?

just to add for informational purposes, my car is a s2, but converted frm a 1.3 mk4 shell, and i bought an engine off a user on here, and wasnt told wot series rs it came out of, i assumed a s2 due to the manifold being a solid 1 piece item, but now im not so sure

Ok, your manifold is an early Series 2 manifold, which didn't have the knock sensors. Does your car have the green plug for the sensor?

im gna have to go thru the loom and have a look, cos the loom is currently laid out over the wing, engine out and bay stripped kinda thing. iv never noticed this until now, so wudnt have any idea if there was a spare plug. time to go look over the weekend i guess

is the knock sensor important to have??

The knock sensor isn't vital to be a part of the engine, but it is critical if you have the plug there is one connected at least, even if its tucked out of the way, and empty plug will massively flatten ignition curves and affect performance. Its basically the same as the sensor telling the ECU that its knocking.
