Default speed sensor

has any 1 any idea what a speed sensor picks up on inside the gearbox. have been told it might be bolts

What car??? Speed sensors are usually external devices, and read notches on an in-built trigger wheel.

As above it depends on the car. Some use the speedo drive gear, others a gear from within the gearbox itself. My guess would be bolt pickup is the least likely.
