brake drums

just changed the rear shoes on my ford orion, (1993, 1.8i ghia), now i cant get the drums back on......is there a trick to this?

slide the self/adjusters back in a bit(the shoes are too far open so u CANT get the drum over them)!

do i need to loosen the union nut off at the back to push the self adjuster back?
