While you've got the camera out, can you take a pic of the end of the mainshaft (the bit that runs in the open roller bearing)

Nice clear close-up will help

think he may have meant the other end that goes inot the bearing to see the 'condition' of mainshaft, see how much life it has left in it

LOL

None, yet as i'm waiting to get this gearbox done. Once thats outta the way, i can start to make the mould of the dash i want, also try making some pannels first.

Sent the 2 diffs off today to get the bearings swapped, if they can, if not, there gonna fit a new one.

Adam, have you got access to a vernier caliper?
Your mainshaft has a bearing sleeve fitted, which is a good thing, just so long as the mainshaft hasn't been turned down to fit a small bearing.
If it has, it will snap....
Measure the diameter of the shaft (the bit sticking out of the bearing will do).
If it is 25mm, then it's time to worry I'm afraid.
However, if it is 27.5mm, carry on - you're doing fine

Good work Adam - no sustitute for getting in there and doing it yourself if you want to learn anything... Far too many people want to rush off and let someone else do it - don't learn anything that way.
No offence to Bernie here - there's some top advice coming from him, bearing in mind he doesn't have to.. I'm sure he's got more than enough to do to worry about a couple of DIYer's taking away his business

Good thread this one!

Im no more likely to do that, than Bernie is to start fooking about trying to map his car....

Much as god loves a tryer.. when i put my foot down 300miles from home i wanna be confident that an expert did the engine, and an expert also did the transmission.

No offence to everyone who likes a biy of DIY.. but in my experience, most DIY jobs will simply be a case of fixing what was obviously wrong.. Its experience that spots things like the shaft not being 27.5mm and being a disaster waiting to happen whilst your in there...

And we all know that only a short time will elapse betwen us refitting our DIY part and that disaster getting bored of waiting.....

LOL, true words Stu...
But - I'll wager you didn't know much about mapping, and Bernie didn't know much about gearboxes when you were in your prams... I'd fancy that you started doing a bit of tinkering.. ?
