Got my MOT booked for the 6th of May, and today I noticed my headlight washers dont appear to be working, I have tried with the lights on,

A) Will it fail the MOT if they dont work or just an advisory ?

b) My mate asked me to check if i can hear a motor when I try and work them, but of course the main window washer is going so I wouldnt be able to tell any difference, has the headlight washers got a seperate relay, if so does anyone have a pic showing it ?

Wont get back from work tomorrow till its pitch black so wont get to look until Saturday unless im called back into work, so just trying to check as many things before I take it for the test.. Thanks.

 

Have you got zenon headlights, ie st-2/st-3?

 

I have a ST170 with xenons as standard.

 

Finally sorted, previous owner removed the fuse for the headlight washers. so I replaced that, to find only the drivers side worked, so I had read a a while ago sterilising fluid in the washer bottle cleans out the jets, so I filled the washer bottle with warm water and the fluid, and now works perfectly.

Think its been the cheapest fix I have ever had on any of my cars, a total of £1.30 to get them working again.

 

They aren't powered, it's the water pressure that pushes them out. The fuse I would have thought is for the pump in the screen wash tank.

They also will only squirt once every 20 minutes or so with the lights on as to save screen wash. Also as far as I know they aren't tested on the mot.

 

Mine failed MOT for offside jet not spraying.Anyone know a quick fix to clear the tips of the jets out?

 

sterilising fluid, fill washer bottle up with it, turn lights on and keep spraying them, cleared mine

 

just noted this old reply they are powered richie, as the jets plug into a powered cannister which deploys the jets outwards, water pressure has nothing to do with them on the 170

 

I think you will find water pressure has a great deal to do with it as it does on every headlight washer I have ever seen that protrudes outwards when they are operated

 

I had them to bits on my old ST170 as one of them kept sticking out, there was definitely no electronic operation of the washers.

 

Im sure mine leak lol. Rather its from the bottle or a pipe.

 

Most modern cars operate on water pressure forcing the pipes out first before the water comes out

On the old school stuff it was like the wiper jets that were just a pipe plumbed to the headlights

If they are stuck just pull them up as they get stuck through lack of use
