Tried to buy it the other day, unfortunately missed out on it so still searching.

Shame as it was a later dash in black. Interior was shot but it was black/tan so i'd be changing it out and price would have been good.

That's a shame. I have grown to like the old dash but in the past I thought it was soooo old fashioned.

I like the dial setup in the old dash in particular the rev counter as it reminds me of series one's but the rest i'm not overly fussed about.

Just found this projec. Sounds very interesting, allways loved the 944. How' your suspension choice? My understanding is the the 944/968 turbo setup is a direct fit.

keep up the great work

I think the 968 stuff only fits the s2 body but I have seen the rear converted and I am sure anything can be done. I plan to buy a simple off the shelf kit for now and maybe put turbo torsion bars in the rear with adjustable shocks.

I should be doing first fit trial of the engine very soon.

Do you know of any other good options for a decent box that will handle good power? most people keep on about getting a turbo lsd box which is all good until you try find one for sensible money that isn't worn out.

I've heard of people using audi boxes but don't know how much hassle that would be, some areas on the box look correct so that helps but I think the main issue is that the boxes I looked at the shifter is on the other side of the box. I think I need to have a bit more of a look into this.

I'm at the engine choice stage, either 1.8t, 2.5 5 cylinder, v8, or something different. The 1.8t is cheap and light and makes good power but the 5 cylinder is what i'm used to and something a bit different.

Since the car I got is a roller I get to pick/choose what to go for and work from there.

I did look at the Audi boxes and there were quite a few listed, I will try and find the list I made. Yes, the shifter is an issue.

For what I paid for a 5 speed manual box (Ł50) I can put an LSD in it and it will still be at the same price as an old 944 Turbo LSD box.

V8 LS is an easy fit if you buy the parts from USA as they are all tried and tested, just a much bigger budget. 1.8T is an easy fit and cheap as chips to do.

I suspect the 5 pot would bolt up in the same way as I did mine

I quite like the thought of a 2.5 v6 tdi 6 speed box if it can handle the power just for the sixth gear.

The 5 pot would bolt up easily but i'm actually thinking of the later 5 pot from the newer golfs/tt rs. As I can get one of them for around 50 quid but then its custom everything to fit it

I've seen quite a few ls swaps but they seem all too common, not many people have actually got running driving 1.8t swaps.

Just spent the last half hour looking to see if I can find one of these rear windows, looks like Deutsche nine was the original company that made them and 944 store was trying to get some for a while

I think the rear glass is quite heavy on these cars so worthwhile saving.

The TT just failed its MOT: Split CV boot, sticky rear brake, corroded brake lines on rear.....I will have to take the Convertible Mini now for the hairdressing appointments

Well that went off topic quite quickly.

I spoke with the company that was sorting the rear screens. They said they made a few of them but they leaked water in so they stopped bothering with them. Shame, I've asked if they know of any that might still be available so we will see. If they find a couple i'll let you know Toby.

Any further progress with this?

I'm really struggling with engine choice atm

1.8t - easy to source/fit but don't sound fantastic
2.2 20vt - not much harder to fit but getting hard to find bits for. Sound better though
v8 turbo - easy to source engines here but I don't know much about them. Conversion kits available.
volvo 20vt 5 cylinder - hard to fit but cheap to buy
audi v8 - lots of work
audi 07k engine - engines stupidly cheap but fitting is hard. Take stupid amounts of power though even as stock.
zetec 2litre - not seen that done but if one sounds like a old rs turbo then i'm interested.

So far I have both a 2.2 20v engine and a v6 s4 engine. I'm waiting for a friend to come give me a hand collecting a 07k engine but that might go in a different car. I'm leaning a bit towards the v8 or 1.8t.

I have been away so not done anything, I keep meaning to get back on it but have lots of time out for my Daughters Triathlons at the moment.

V8 is defo the way to go if you do not mind the cost, twin turbo that and you would have a bonkers car

Yeah i've been following a guy's progress on facebook for a while, he just had his ls2 turbo dyno'd at 800bhp and 1200nm.

had to cut part of the bonnet to let the engine poke through but it looks good. That was a single turbo setup.

This thread really makes me want a 944 I always liked them and remember seeing one in a mag with a five pot Audi lump in it. Always quite fancied putting a Volvo five cylinder turbo engine into one.

What sort of money do they fetch now?

Get one.

Things like nice Turbos go over Ł10k easily but 2.5 and 2.7 are cheap and auto’s cheaper, it’s an easy swap to manual.

Most likely would have been this one. Audi 20vt engine, supra box/diff setup, custom tunnel etc.

Volvo engine in one.

Now's the time to buy as like all classics they are getting harder to find in good condition and the prices are going up all the time. I missed one a few months ago and went after another which I also missed so the one I posted the picture of above was third time lucky. I'm just waiting on it to be delivered in the next couple of weeks so I can start going from there.

Engine choice i'm still unsure of so I think for the time being most likely it will be a 1.8t just for cheapness to buy and fit so I can at least enjoy the car while I decide later on what to switch in

April 18th was when I mentioned about getting the 944. We are now on September 7th and it finally turned up tonight.

Good points

Has more bits left on it than I was expecting - torque tube, dash, window motors, mirrors, handles.

Bad points

It was originally red - I will have to give the engine bay a clean up before I bolt stuff to it.
Shortlist of bits needed - New brakes/suspension/engine/gearbox/interior.
Something on the rear calipers is a bit funky - we was rolling it down to put in my storage unit and they kept locking up, few swift kicks to each rear wheel and it would move again quite easily. I was just happy my boss decided he wanted to see it as I couldn't have moved it by myself easily.

Still I knew what I was getting into and it is a long term project. Part of me is still thinking about the v8 route but I've got the 5 pot audi lump to do instead so that will go in. Now comes the fun of sourcing bits for it

Good luck with the project. I really like the 944. Is it the same underneath as a 924?
If I was was man enough I would sell my RST and start this kind of nonsense!

There are similarities underneath between the two but tbh you are better off just going for the 944, easier to find, cheaper most of the time, plus they have more upgrades. Early cars have quite a lot of differences to later cars so stuff like the dash cannot be upgraded from the square style to the more rounded etc.

Keep the rst and just look out for a cheap 944. I'd love to see one fitted with a zetec turbo as I reckon that could be done good and not break the bank. If I wasn't going audi 5 pot with mine I'd be tempted.

Adapter for the golf bellhousing bolted up to torque tube on first attempt so very pleased with that.

Stripped everything off the 1.8t Engine ready to mate up to the bellhousing tomorrow and tack weld the Engine mounts.

the more i look look at the car I can see the 924 is the same in a lot of ways underneath.

with the 205 still not back I thought I would press on and get the engine in this weekend so I can have a good tidy up in the garage and hopefully start to work out what Else needs to be done on the car. I have found that the 265bhp tfsi turbo will fit these engines and they are good for nearly 380bhp and just need new rods.

I am using the Audi passenger side engine mount and I will build a platform for the mount to mate to the crossmember on the Porsche original mount, this will become thicker and I will support the back using the Audi dog leg mount. On the other side I will fabricate from scratch as I need more room for a bigger turbo.

Engine bolted up to golf diesel bellhoising that I cut down.

This is the first engine swap conversion where the new lump is much smaller and lighter Than the one that came out first, there is so much room upfront I will be able to get a huge intercooler in there if needed. The Porsche rad should be easily up to cooling the engine.

I want to pick up and store a mk1/2 golf (most likely a 2 as not 100% on the 1) a bmw e30 and a passat 4 motion. We are just deciding where we want to move to in the future so we know how much storage we have. I figure buying them now while they are available then do what I want later on to them.
