would there be any way of testing the engine without firing it up, hate to get someone to install it only to find out it needs a rebuild.

1000 with gearbox. just trying to work out worst case. also im no good with engines, would be relying on garages for any rebuilding.

probably work out more economical to rebuild it before fitting it, in case its no good.

Most parts are no longer available.

Gaskets and bearings are no problem as they are shared with the blacktop.

Pistons and rods are no longer available.

You could do leak down test but bare minimum it should turn over.

I would do a deal where you can pull the head before you take it away. If the piston crowns look good along with the bores you take it.

If it needs a rebuild there are cheaper ways to do it but if the engine number is there it will always be an Rs engine and carry a premium. I wouldn't touch it with out an engine number.

And a grand is to good to be true.

Box is worth 600~700
bare engine 1000
Usable ap clutch and fly 150
inlet complete 200
good turbo on mani 400+

and so on

There was one sold on auction before xmas on flebay. It had the inlet and turbo and sold for £2250, the guy felt it was worth nearer 4k. It was sat on a pallet so could not been seen running either.

Everything is available, but maybe not standard bits.

We had ours rebuilt last year with new forged rods and pistons, head polished and ported, crank knife edged, all new bearings gaskets etc for £4k.

That doesn't take into account otehr bits that youd probably want to replace during a new build such as oil pump (~£300) and water pump (~£400) etc

Gearbox was completely overhauled also with all new bearings and synchros at a cost of £660

New AP clutch will set you back around £400, a turbo rebuild around £350, some sort of tubular manifold (if you want to go that route) £300 - £900 depending on make

The list goes on....

That does seem too cheap, alarm bells would be ringing. Boxes can sell for as little as £450 if you know what you’re looking for you can tell if the quaife diff is still fitted.
Post up some pictures on here and try and take a picture of the drive shaft input in the box

is it not just cheaper to forge a blacktop and fit an lsd to the standard mtx?

Can you not get hold of a bore scope.(Them small cameras which are attached to a screen/monitor) then you could check the cylinders without taking the head off.

Piston and rods around a grand for a good set few hundred quid bearings and gaskets , hone , skim etc another few hundred. Ian Howell charges around £1800 for a complete bottom end ready to bolt a head on . New water pumps are your main problem and oil pump gears Defo look at that if your looking for decent bhp

Cheers paul
