I've just received a mk1 3 door cosworth nos shell (was painted in the 90s but never been on the road)
ive had a right good google but can't particularly find out anything about this tag that's on the old girl, my presumption was that all the sunroof non seemwelded shells that were made by ford could be a 1.3, 1.6 or cosworth etc so don't get why this would state cosworth
any help would be great

 

Its a 909 motorsport shell

 

 

the 909 part number denotes a motorsport shell. I'm not too clued up on 3 doors, but perhaps the shells have small differences to regular 3 doors? Does it have a sunroof now? as i'd imagine a motorsport shell wouldn't, unless it had been replaced at some point.

 

Hi I've been digging again and it seems twins is right, you could get a sunroof 909 motorsport shell and this is what this car is although I can't see the differences between the 909 and the standard shell, argh!!

 

you will probably find it has no seamsealer and wouldnt have been seamwelded at the factory.just spot welded like normal .

If its got a sunroof then its the road spec 909 version from 1989 so comes with all the bells and whistles like seam sealer etc, it was the non sunroof 909 that was basically a load of thinner panels simply welded together and nothing else.

When you start installing a few things you will spot the subtle differences between it an a 1986 cosworth shell. The advert for these shells is in my profile.

tge truth of the matter is ive taken that and a 3 door cosworth that was very very clean until someone wrapped it around a lamp post in 2004. I'm currently deciding on what route to take with her, either way I can't keep it as I've got too many so I'll have to do something with them one way or another, just deciding whether I would be stringed up by the ford finatics if I rebuild it!

Not Ashs old f plate white 3dr is it? that had a similar fate around then

 

No buddy,
shes black and ended up like a banana around a lamp post near a b and q.
it hit the drivers door but has bent the car too badly to be repaired, all the important bits are still intact i.e. Front and rear end.
the new shell has a new bonnet (cosworth with vents) and two doors (new)
it was painted in black ready to re shell an rs500 in the 90s and was started so has brake servo and brake pipes in place etc
only thing she I need to find are side skirts dash, pass engine mount and door card. But I need to know her retail value as a rebuilt car apposed to her value now + time taken to do it to assertion wether or not it's worth me doing, feel like I'm running in circles!

 

Ouch that did take an impact.

You will find that the fuse box wont fit properly as the 909 shells used the later saff bulkhead, best thing to do is to remove the outer case of the existing fuse box and swap it for any mk2 sierra version, that way it bolts to the shell properly and the fuse board still sits nice and dry inside it. Also you will need a Mk2 sierra internal rear courtesy light in the boot and drill the hole for the rear aerial. Your rear tow eye will also sit a bit lower than the existing one, no biggie though.

Resell value, well I can tell you for a fact that over 25 RS500s use these later shells now, and they seem to sell fine regardless.

I would rather a nice fresh rust free shell over a bodged up original one all day long.

Any ideas on it's worth completed? Chassis number will either be re stampped or transferred over but once for sale potential buyers will be told of the new shell used to restore it!

 

I have been out of the 3dr game for some time and they have rocketed in the last few years as well.

I imagine the donor car will be in decent shape its been dry stored since 2004 after the accident?

Most people don't stamp the shell, just transfer the VIN tag in the engine bay and keep the floor blank, plus cut out the floor numbers from the old shell as proof it no longer exists.

 

personaly would say you would get more from it selling it as a project for someone to get into 3dr ownership .restore /rebuild costs can get out of hand quite quickly

 

wow that cars had a bit of a bang, hope the driver survived

 

i remember that car - was parked on his drive in Chalvey for ages and then one day it disappeared as he moved it to one of his houses

 

Thanks for the help chaps he did indeed survive as he wasn't wearing his seat belt he ended up laid on top of his girlfriend in the passenger seat, both were unharmed!

I have one of these shells notified dvla and had to stamp in one of there chassis numbers. I have all the proof and tags for the shell though! It was pj motorsport directors and he sold it to Dan/Dave Morris who was a staff member as a shell.

 

as Jason hass put about chassis number now. If you re-shel,l the legal way it DVLA inspection and a new chassis number, but that doesn't seem to go down well with some.

 

If its a brand new service shell and you have receipts to prove then its just classed as a replacement part so you do not require a SABTVRO DVLA issued VIN number. One of those is only required when its a previously used shell being built up into a car with no donor. In such cases you also have the option of compiling your own unique 17 digit VIN number.

Dealers bodyshops swap out damaged shells around the country daily for insurance companies and have been doing since the car was invented, and they all retain the original cars VIN. Joe Bloggs has as much legal right to do the same thing as a dealer.
