Pictures, video & Photoshop ForumIf you want to show off your photoshop skills, share pics and videos of your car or other cars you've found, here's the place to go.
Nice mix of shots, really like some of your pictures from the paddock: how long were you waiting to take those? Most of the cars I wanted to look at were mobbed with people!
Cleared my camera off at the weekend, so a few contributions to the thread. Firstly a very awesome sounding Lola from American Speedfest at Brands...
...couple of shots taken at Le Mans...
...fantastic race this year, but very disappointing in terms of photography. All my fave spots from 2014 (when I last went) had either been blocked off or turned into hospitality. Did go to the inside of Tertre Rouge for the first time though (where the above were taken) so at least got a few OK shots.
Took a few pictures at Goodwood as well...
...I did try some panning shots, but it felt like my arm was going to fall off, so I abandoned that!
Awesome pics love the scooby rally one. What lens and settings were you using as mine look too dark and had a hard time to focus especially with polariser on so took that off.
I'm looking forward to LeMans next year so will have to look where the slow corners are.
I got myself set to take some of the paddock pics only for people to walk in the way but I think I got lucky as it wasn't too bad and kind of used my friend to block the way lol

The trees are pretty dense up on the rally stage, so the light isn't great up there even on a sunny day. Pictures were all taken with a Canon 60D and using a 55-250mm lens. I was shooting on the Subaru corner at 1/400 and ISO 2500 (higher ISO than I would like but, as said, the light was rubbish!).
...then click on any image you want to look at, the EXIF data should be displayed below the photo (on the right).

Mulsanne corner and Arnage are the two slowest points on the circuit but the speed of the cars isn't the biggest challenge at Le Mans: it's the bloody high fences everywhere! Even if you don't take a picture though it's still an incredible weekend.
Did you go just for the weekend or stretch it out for a few days? If I took only one lens with me what would you take? 18-55 or 75-300? How close can you get to the cars?
Wow just looked through your other pics are you track side at these events just behind barrier or you've been lucky to get great spots through gaps in the fence lol. I do love your pics mate and just shows how much I need to improve.

I went for a long weekend this year. Drove down very early Friday morning and set up the tents as soon as we got there. Do the pit lane walk Friday, then have a few beers in the evening. I tend not to drink during the race, as I want to watch: not fall into a beer coma, so I do all my drinking Friday!
We came back Sunday evening: I personally prefer to do it that way as I can be back at work on Monday. The only negative of doing it that way is that you have to leave Le Mans as the race is ending. If you wait even a couple of minutes after the flag has waved the local area is totally gridlocked.
Personally I would take the 75-300 mm. You can get close enough to use the 18-55 during the Friday pit lane walk, but during the race the 18-55 would be no good for individual car shots.

Thanks very much for the kind words. I was trackside for the rallycross and speedway events, but I am spectator side for everything else.
I personally think a lot of it is down to practice. You can read about taking pictures all day long, but you learn far more getting out and using the camera. I do find Flickr really helpful for helping steer you on the right track, as you can find pictures you like, see what settings they were taken with, then have a go yourself. In that respect I think the learning curve with DLSR's is much less severe than it must have been with film.
Keep at it though, don't be afraid to play with settings and the improvements will come. I look at my pictures now and think they are a massive improvement on the pictures that I was taking a few years ago... but then I look at the work of others and realize that I still haven't even scratched the surface of photography!

I know what you mean I've been talking to Aron Vickers (aronvickersphotography) and we are planning on meeting up in October as I think he has some magazine shoots car events to cover so I'll be shadowing him and getting tips. I like the way he edits the pictures by adding stormy sky etc.

I don't know him personally, but I know his work! Been following him for a while now.
Photo editing is something I really want to get to grips with. I prefer to concentrate on taking better pictures with the camera, but having the knowledge/skill to better tweak what I've taken is something I really want to get my head round.

I'm looking forward to October.
On a side note my friend Emma works for RedBull and she is going to take me and as many of us as she can on a guided tour of the F1 factory so I'm really looking forward to that and will take pictures where I can just need to sort a weekend.
Popped to Canada Heights for the last round of the British Sidecarcross Championship. Was having a lazy day, so didn't take that many pictures, few of my faves from the day...
...quite likely that's my last motorsport weekend of the year, so chances are I won't touch the camera again until next year now!
Motorsport season is underway again, so time to dust the camera off! Popped to Spain for the opening round of the World Rallycross Championship. Few of my faves from the weekend:

Awesome pics as always mate I've got a few pics to stick up from a local lake and 5am at Luton airport for some practice in low light
Cheers mate it was a nice early start for me and my daughter at Luton airport 5am lol but was good to be able to try out low light pictures. Any advice on how to improve these or low light in the future?

I should be asking you that question really: your shots are better than anything I have got in similar conditions!
Awesome pics as usual mate what shutter speeds are you using?
Cheers! The first two pans are 1/80, the two RS200 shots are 1/400 and the bottom one was 1/500.
I probably played it a bit too safe with the latter three shots, but I don't like to get movement in the picture at the expense of detail on the cars, so I went a bit faster with the shutter speeds.
I'll have to keep that in mind next week and get a mix of pan and freeze frame. Have you used a 1.4x extension on your lens? Wonder if it's worth buying one in the future as I think my lens is struggling on the max zoom
Really nice photos Stephen what filter are you using and did you edit on the computer?
Thanks pal. I always use a circular polariser to cut the reflections and get the colour of the car to pop. And then just basic edits in Lightroom to address any issues.
Stephen nice I use a polariser just thinking if it's worth getting a graduated filter to bring out the sky? I don't have lightroom only photoshop but don't use to edit photos mine are straight from camera. I remember when I was at school ( the days we made up our own film canisters) we were doing black and white photos and use to develop are own photos in a dark room. We used a red filter to bring out the contrast in the sky and it made a big difference.

I have never tried one, be interested to know how effective they are (and whether they throw any of the camera settings out).
Lovely set Stephen, really like your pans of the drag strip.
I did the whole of the last race on one battery, but I didn't take anywhere near as many pictures as I had planned, as several of my fave spots were off limits/had massive fences in place!
I usually have power available during the evening at every two day event I go to, but I have a cheap battery (bought via Amazon) which I carry just in case!
At the moment that battery isn't in stock so think I'm going to end up going with the original battery only and charge it when ever I can over the 5 days. My new memory card is a 64gb 80mbs SD card which will be plenty.
