Out of interest, how do they measure "drive-by"?

Couldn't you just get near and put the clutch in?

Genuine question, I don't know what the requirements are.

They measure driveby with a meter at the side of the track, and yes if you back off or dip the clutch it will mean you make less noise.

But there are several meters and they arent very easy to spot, so you will be forever lifting trying to avoid them.

I'v been waiting for this to come around again. Unfortunatly a few days prior to booking it up I have the threat of redundancy come my way so have decided to not risk breaking the car. You were right, even with this lot hanging off the back of it:

It still maxes out the db meter on my iPhone (101.3 db max reading) which is too much for bedford.
Going to take it anyway though and hope its quieter than the iPhone says, after all its fucking shite as a phone so why should it be trusted as a decibel meter

I cant really go any longer or it will start interferring too much with getting the boot open and with the cooling fan on the drivers side, hence I got that size.

I did think about maybe doing a 180 degree bend after it and fitting another one underneath, but its going to get to the stage there is so much weight hanging out the back of it that its going to be (even more, lol) ruining the handling.

When I was testing it the other day, I didnt have the boot lid on so it would have been picking up some extra engine noise too, where as I will make sure its in place at bedford, maybe that will help.

Back pressure is worrying me too, if I have another 180 degree bend and another silencer, I dont want to risk melting the engine just to do a trackday.

I figure at least after bedford I'll know where I stand on a proper meter etc, its combe that is my real target with the car anyway not bedford, and they only have a static test, and static tests are relatively easy to get round

what about sending the exhaust underneath to the front and having the weight of the silencer at the front?

Well the mag are doing a day there in august that I pretty much have to attend, will also be at the action day on 24th April, may do a coupe of full trackdays too, will see how it goes, really need to take some time out and do some work on the brakes too at some point, although for bedford im just going to brake very gently and early anyway, and will probably back off on the straights too, as its only the handling im interested in testing, not the engine or laptimes at this point in time, its all a pretty long process but obviously its a bit more modified than most cars we all build, so there is more to go wrong!

TBH if I start getting into those sort of realms, I really need to just be getting hold of another shell and starting again, there are quite a few compromises I have inherited and dont like on this shell, so to start cutting it up to make room for the exhaust going forwards would be pointless.

I think i'll probably use a corsa c shell if I do go down that route, will see how im fixed for time and cash in 2011 probably and make the decision then.

Might even still just do it the easy way and put my engine and a set of nitron shocks and big brakes etc that are all available off the shelf onto a vx220, that really would be a mentally quick trackday car, but I dont like taking the easy route normally

vx220 would be great, but a bit boring i think

new shell, designed from scratch sounds a great idea

We're hoping not TBH mate, but it depends on the level of take up we get from the vauxhall clubs.

Boring to build, but not boring to drive, I guess its the sort of thing I would have once (if ever) I have settled down with a family and have less time to spend in the garage trying to invent things from old shite, and just have time to do actual trackdays with.

would be a cool thing to do, and im pretty confident I can do a good job of designing it to work well based on the experience I have had with mine now.
