Thanks for the pictures, should be easy to find a bell housing. I did have one from an early 924 I think it was that people used to put the 2.2 5 cylinder audi's in but no idea where thats gone in the garage

 

 

Re the pics above, I have started making the template for the 2nd part of the adapter, I had to find a normal level datum so used a spirit level on the mounts for the clutch slave as that sits level in the original car; this should make the engine sit at correct slant.

I sprayed around the bellhousing to get a rough shape, I will make the prototype template in 2 bits of 10mm ally to see how the spigot looks in the flywheel to ensure it doesn't go in too deep.

The wings on the first plate locate the oe bolt holes on the mk4 golf bellhousing, there will be 5 bolts in total and these will stop the 2 part adapter twisting, I will use all but 2 of the original oe bellhousing bolt holes and before making a run of adapters I will make sure the adapters trim down and look neater.

 

The wife has gone horse riding so I have put the dirty bellhousing in the automatic parts washer (dishwasher) to clean it up before painting it.

Good progress, I had seen a couple of other ways for this being done, one was a guy in america used a s4/rs4/s2 aby spacer plate welded to a early 924 bell housing instead.

 

I see a 944 on Thursday and thought of your project. Keep the photos coming.

How well does the dishwasher work, ours is only about a year old but it's getting changed with a new kitchen so was thinking of putting it in the garage for just such an occasion

The adapter plates are now made in prototype, need to fit up to donor engine now and check tolerances for clutch and flywheel, will then off for a few laser cut finals. Looking forward to getting it running and then tuning to see what power I can get for reasonable money 300 bhp first target and then see how that feels before looking for more.

 

glad to see your still progressing with this, let me know how you get on with the adapter plates i'm still interested in the conversion bits.

 

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten you. I plan to do a basic set of instructions and have simple arrows etched on the plates to show which was points to the back of the car and which way is up.

and 300bhp should be quite easy to get on stock internals, probably the downpipe fabrication would be the hardest part. A cheap ebay log style manifold should work for this setup going by my mates 1.8t in his audi coupe gt, there was still loads of room compared to the stock manifold

 

Yeah 300 doesn't seem too hard on these engines.

I need to mock up the engine in the car and then fabricate some engine mounts, I may get my friend to make them with an eye to sell a few but if not I will just make some basic ones myself.


Once the engine is in and running I plan to do an inexpensive suspension upgrade and I have some big Porsche calipers from an old project so just need to add some bigger discs. I really don't plan to go mad, probably just make it light and a half decent cheap cage.

I have had a bit of a break from the garage recently but last weekend I put the 944 up on my ramps ready to offer up the gearbox this weekend coming so I can trial fit the engine to the adapter and make some engine mounts.

Got back out in the garage and had a good day on the car, really enjoyed it.

I mounted the new 5 speed manual and torque tube, gear selector and cross brace ready to rebuild the rear suspension. For now I will just for decent Shox at the rear and put thicker torsion bars later or do coilover conversion.

I have also started making the engine mounts and they locate on the original 944 mounts on the front cross member. I should be able to offer up the engine next week and then start things like the exhaust etc.

One of my old VW mates is going to adapt the 1.8t loom to plug straight in to the porker fuse box running standard ecu and then I will get it mapped once the bigger turbo is on.

 

have you thought about getting adapter looms to sit inbetween both looms and make it easy to do the conversion made?

It seems some have Vw fuse boxes that would make it easy. My engine just needs an Earth and positive to run as it is so complete but will see what can be done.

Nice 924. Will you keep the standard engine? I bet the 924 can be pretty quick as it is very light. Lots in common with mk1 golf as it was to be the scirocco mk2 paid for by Vw and built by Porsche. VW pulled the plug and Porsche carried on with the project, I can see lots on the 944 in common with the Vw parts (and a few Vw part numbers)

at the moment i want to keep it standard, but been told its not the fastest. not sure what my conversion options are yet, anny suggestions welcome lol. My cossie is draining me enough so cheaper the conversion on the 924, the better. I have been keeping an eye out for a crash damaged boxter though lol.

Not sure what bits a boxster will help with other than brakes.

The 1.8t 20v engine fit quite easily so you have 150bhp,to 225 bhp standard and easily 250 plus then 350 and up if you want to get stuck in. If it is nice to drive and super original it will be worth more standard to some but is never going to be a fast track car without work....they handle very well though.

 

Today I fixed the one bit of rust that I found on the car, it was near a suspension point so would have been an MOT fail, I cut out all the rot (about the size of a fag packet) and welded in new metal and then sealed and painted it. I have now ordered the powerflex bushes and solid mounts for the rear suspension and I can then fit all the rear up.

 

I’m in the workshop on Wednesday Toby I’ll see what drawings I can find

Great project! I love 924's and 944's and drooled over loads yesterday at the NEC classic car show, was over them like a rash lol be following this one.

 

Was the NEC good? I had thought of going.

The 924 and 944 was the unloved Porsche but leave the EGO aside and they are brilliant cars, I really like driving them.

 

Was a good show, but not well laid out, porelynorganised imo asnone hall looked like another... so much of the same cars in each hall.

Unloved I get! The NEC show had EVERY marque of Jaguar there, but not one XJ40! Couldn’t get my breath at that.

It is nearly back on its wheels, just ordering up some service parts like handbrake shoes and new brake lines. I have found that quite a lot of the Porsche Range fits, I.e. With a little adapter you can fit 993 brakes right up to turbo big reds. The car will be light so might just try ebc ultimate pads and discs all round and see how I get on, these are cheap for a full set.

I will pick up the engine very soon and offer it up and finish the engine mounts.

 

I have not been overly interested in the 924's, there was a black turbo nearby for ages but I think it was going to be rotten as its been parked for a long time before I next saw it up for sale on a site.

I've got my eye on a black 944 auto currently, interior is screwed which I don't care about as its tan. The body doesn't look too bad. I'm just waiting to see how a situation plays out at work before going for that as my money might be needed elsewhere. My last project has been sold on and the spares are up for sale so it all just depends on work and my wife. The boss said I can store it at work so that would be no problem.

Spent a while on tipec the other night to get an idea of what I want, and think the 1.8t is the way to go.

 

Good man, get it bought. The swap to manual is a doddle to do, it is just a few bolts although I haven't done the pedal box yet but it will be bolt in I am sure.

 

Yeah i'm sure the pedal box will be an easy task. If at worst the clutch pedal can probably just be added providing the brake pedal isn't a huge us spec lump.
