Default Newbie bought a sierra 4x4 cosworth

Hi All

Though i have been looking at this site and watching people build some brilliant cars for some time, but have only just registered due to buying a ford.

When i was in my youth i was addicted to fords owning (2 x Super sports and 1 x Escort Custom) but then move onto buying Subaru's instead of Cosworths even though Cosworths were still very close to my heart. I think at the time i wanted something newer. (were talking 1997 here) Escorts were out of my price range and sierra's just seemed dated at the time.

But now i am back in a position to purchase said car i didnt want to miss out on a childhood dream.

So, here she is, my K Plate Cosworth which has been dry stored for nearly 7 years. In that time one owner couldnt get here running correctly and spent £4000 on the engine with reciepts to prove. He still couldnt get the car to run properly so he sold it to the person i bought it off. He did find the fault and fix it but lost interest in the car and again put it into storage.

Thats the story upto now so i'll let the pictures tell the rest.

Thanks

Hi

The problem turned out to be electrical. Something to do with the cars emobliser and current drop. I think after he'd spent that sort of money and was still scratching his head thinking its a mechanical issue you just lose interest and cut your losses. The guy who i bought the car from admitted that in reality he didnt have the time or inclanation to get stuck into her.
i think im just lucky to be in the right place at the right time to secure a mint car with afew issues that need sorting out one by one.

Hi all
Thanks for the kind words.
Just to give you a brief update about the car. I have taken the car to the local body shop to have the drivers side rear arch cut out and repaired due to rust. (i wish i had taken pic's but i didnt sorry) I am also having a dent pushed out in the rear passenger door, the door moldings refitted and then a general good buff and polish. When i get the car back i'll take some more pics and upload them.

After that im just going to get the car back up and running replacing the timing belt, sensors, spark plugs etc. Ive bought a timing belt cover, afew clips here and there, a rocker cover gasket etc just to really get the car to a point where im happy mechanicly and then i'll start on tidying up the wiring loom before having someone set the fueling and boost.

Once the car is back i'll take some pic's of the car and the stuff i have bought

Again thanks everyone for showing intrest in my project.

Hi Again

Thank you for the kind words.

Just to update you to where im at with the car. I received it back from the body shop yesterday after having both inner and outer sills replaced, the strenghtening plates inside the sills replaced, the O/S/R arch cut out and replaced and the N/S/R door repaired. All these area's were painted and then the full car buffed. Next to do is replace the rotten fuel tank and line all the engine, I have a new fuel pump and holder to fit then a complete service on the engine before I have it remapped as the car has bigger injectors, etc etc.

Can anyone advise who to use for a remap in the Lancashire area. I was going to use Wayne Schofield @ Chipwizards in Milnrow Rochdale as im told he is very good unless there is anyone better?
Thanks again and here are the pic's.

HI

I live in Oldham. Good to hear your doing a rebuild too. Are you looking at the cosworth shell on Ebay at the moment? Hopefully you'll get some pic's up once you get the shell and make a start.

Thanks

Thanks for the messages everybody.

Right just to bring the thread upto date. I have been doing afew things on the car when money allows, I removed the old rotten fuel tank, cleaned and painted the underside of the floor, Ive only give it a quick doing as i want to get the car on the road this year. Once winter comes I will strip the underside of the car and paint the floor properly. I have painted a new tank in Bmw mini Grey. i will use this color throughout the car as and when i overhaul parts like the back axle or running gear etc. once i had put the car back together i decided to run the car in for an MOT just so i had a list of what is needed to get her on the road. To my supprise and bearing in mind the car hasnt been on the road since 2009 all she needs is an ABS sensor as the lights on, a set of front brake pads which im going to replace with a full set of disc's and pads all round anyway, an indicator bulb and a cat as the car has a full stainless on her. All in all i was dead chuffed to hear that
Now on a negative side i think the head gasket is on its way out because even though the car starts and ticks over great, even revs great there is water in the oil and the header tank is loosing its level. A further investigation is needed but im just happy to carry on down my list replacing or repairing as I go.
Right, enough from me, its time to let the pictures do the talking.

Thanks
Andrew
