Twin Turbo V8 1969 Ford Capri BLK-40T
i thought i would do a little write up on my brothers project. he has had this Capri for 20 years. it has been black for nearly 20 years and it had a 302ci Windsor which at one time was the fastest Naturally Aspirated 302ci in Australia and 2nd fastest in the world. it was a stout little engine running consistent 10.50's@127mph he did well over 500 passes with that engine before deciding to strip it down and freshen it up, even then it still looked like it could have run another 500. while it was out he decided to take my other brother's 2JZ Corolla which run's 8.4@160 for a few passes, after loving the power of that he was convinced that turbo was the way to go. so for the past few years he has been doing this, he wanted to stay legal, so going off the weight of the car he went with a Lexus 4.0L V8 with twin GT35/40's, it uses the factory block and heads, Argo Rods and Ross Pistons, the heads have been ported and flow a fair bit more than factory, as you can tell a bit of work had to go into figuring out how to fit it all in there but we go it . Norm at Northmead Auto Centre did the Powerglide. after alot of problems with cams etc we finally tuned it last week it made 648rwhp at 23psi on BP Ultimate, which isn't too bad. we drove it out Friday 26/3 to WSID for Full Throttle Friday, the car weighed in at a smidgin under 3100lbs, even with big problems of stalling it up to get her on boost, it ran 2 9.40 passes at 148mph all on BP Ultimate. after we work a few things out should see it in the very low 9's possibly 8's at over 150mph. not bad for a car that is driven to and from the track, a couple times during the week and every weekend without sounding biased it is probably one of the most neatest race Capri's out there.

we took the car for more testing on Friday, it was spinning the tyres all the way down the track was still running 9.4@148. we have to change to a stiff wall slick. we have spoken to a few people and they all believe the converter is stuffed, its not locking up it was revving up over 7000rpm. the converter is slipping in the range of 25+% instead of 10%. with the 3.5 diff gears crossing the line at 6300rpm he is going over at 7500rpm. should be running high 8's to very low 9's @ around 157-160mph. gotta love the fact he drives it there and it's on pump fuel BP Ultimate.

thanx guys, it should be running better numbers 9.0-9.1 @ around 157mph but the converter is shot, once we get a new converter numbers should improve. we want to get it down to 8.90's on pump fuel, then put it on E85 put some more boost and timing in get around 800rwhp and run mid-8's and still drive it to the track and back
#15
we took her out on Saturday, put the 2-step etc on but it went backwards, it looks like when the sparky did the 2-step he may have somehow messed with the timing and retarded it as it was a slug, was running 10.2's@137 we are going to get the tuner to check it all this week.

gearbox and converter were stuffed, having a Neal Chance converter made and gearbox is being rebuilt, should have her in the 8's in the near future. pretty damn quick even as it is for a 100% street legal car that gets driven almost daily and to and from the track
the Toyota is a crazy lil thing, people like it cos it's something different, putting her on E85 now and throwing in a few more lbs of boost, should make around 850rwhp, should get us inot the high 7's.

we have convinced him to put it on E85 also, put the boost up to 28-30psi bit more timing, it should see close to 800rwhp, it was making 20+hp every 1psi from 16psi that was on BP98, the tuner is confident we will see close to 50hp more at the same boost on E85.

the new converter is in. took the Capri in to do a couple runs on the dyno just to see what power it makes with the new Neal Chance converter before we take it out Test n Tune this weekend. same tune as before on BP Ultimate 98 when it made 648rwhp on 21psi. we were pleasantly surprised we were all expecting less power but it actually made more than it did with the previous converter ranged between 650 (fouled 7 heat range plug) and 673rwhp (new 10 heat range plug). but that was not the only gain, it picked up almost 200ft lbs of torque. it went from 500ft-lbs to 680ft-lbs. boost came on alot faster and it stalls up on the transbrake/2-step 5500rpm in a 3-4 seconds instead of 8-10+ seconds like before (amazingly we forgot to put a bung in the exhaust after we pulled the Lambda sensor out ) my other brother was looking at maybe investing in a Neal Chance converter, we were very impressed. i was hoping for a cuddle from my brother for telling him to go a NCR Converter but i didn't get it it ran 9.4@147 before, i think it should do a 9.0-9.1@150-152 now

here is one of our other little toys we are playing with, its a cheap as chips 302ci Windsor, when i say cheap i mean cheap engine cost us around AU$3000 just playing with it till the good 302 for it is ready. runs 11.1@119 that was on a dewy track. with the new 302 we are expecting low 10's. it used to run 10.5's@127 in the TTV8 Capri which weighed around 3000lbs, this new little Capri is around 200lbs lighter.

thanx mate
Capri ran a 9.1@150, which is a new PB. did a few mods in the last few weeks, we changed the converter, new Strange double adjustable shocks, added the Caltracs and it worked a treat. we haven't set the ass end up yet but it looks promising as she ran straight as an arrow down the track and a 1.36 60' drove home nicely too

took the Capri out last night. we checked the converter on the weekend see what the stall is, it was 7000rpm which is what he changes at, we wanted 5500-6000rpm but i ordered my converter at the same time as his so they may have possibly got confused with the rpm, either way we can change the stall with new stators. we went out last night to see how it goes with higher rpm and she didn't let us down. got 4 runs, first pass was slow took us that run to work out the boost for launching and the tyre pressure, wasn't the best track being a Wednesday night but was still good, was still spinning a bit. Top Gear Australia was out shooting for a story, they were testing the new BMW X6 and Porsche Cayman (they ran like 12.9@110), they came over for a chat, they were really impressed with the Capri, though they thought it was too fast to be a street car, we were all ecstatic, and after the first pass the car was consistent as
9.19@149.9 1.40 60' 7500rpm
9.06@150.7 1.37 60' 7700rpm
9.05@151.5 1.39 60' 8000rpm
9.02@151.2 1.38 60' 8000rpm
the last 2 passes the car pulled right and it was out of the groove 3/4 of the way down, u can sorta make it out in the 2nd launch in the vid, could have been 1 or even 2 8.9 passes, but overall couldn't be happier.
little video, only used phone, as we weren't expecting to run good numbers

we took the Capri down to Vince's tonight for the E85 tune finally he gave up the quest for a 8-second pass on pump gas picked up around 120hp with 5psi more. made 730rwhp on same boost just E85 put in, ended up with 798@27psi up from 673rwhp@22psi on BP Ultimate. Vince says we need the .8 rears and it will make alot more power we were putting in more boost but it wasn't making the power. the dyno was working pretty hard also, and it would have been pretty hot so the power could be showing up lower. the strip is were it counts. car sounds alot crisper, boosts better, runs cooler and drives MUCH better.

what a fuckin' great day, the car ran like a dream. the first pass a back off at about half track but still ran a 8.9@155 we knew it would be a great day, ran a best of 8.48@159 and 8.49@160 backed up by a few more 8.5's and 8.6's best 60' of 1.291 we can thank Mario Teuma for that, this guy is really clicked on and has a great head on his shoulders for racing. his 308ci NA Torana ran a PB of 10.20@131 today also.

little update we took the pipes off the car and it is now making around 830rwhp on the same boost and we have a new PB of 8.34@164.5mph we tried to lighten her up but it didn't like it, we put a fibreglass bonnet on and the thing just wanted to wheelstand its amazing how much difference 17kg can make

has been a while. have a few changes since a few months back. we have put bigger exhaust housings on the Capri, went from .63 to 1.06 and added a CDI made a huge difference picked power up from 800rwhp@27psi to 870rwhp@27psi.
popped down to Vince's we are getting the car prepared to race on Saturday, we put some TurboSmart springs in for more pressure as the Turbonetics wastegate he runs are discontinued, so it was hard to find a spring. ran it up with the boost controller off, made just over 500rwhp@10psi, we were very surprised to see that much. i told him to drive with the e-Boost2 off now that we know exactly how much pressure and power it makes, he didn't listen tidied up the tune a little bit and the new springs allowed us couple more psi of boost, made 910rwhp on just over 29psi, going to have some 15-18lb springs made up for it so we can turn up the boost. no pics or video's unfortunately weren't expecting to run it up today. the car sounds alot more crisp. was a little popping sound on a couple passes before, but it's all cleared up and sounds really grumpy.

i have an online business, 1 bro is a plumber and the other a spray painter. we do alot of the work ourselves, have alot of friends in the business and the tuner looks after us, it's not too dear. the initial first tune alone was AU$400 and he might charge $100-$200 for each one after that, if it's nothing too big then it's free.

screwed the boost up to 30psi, put on a new sleek bonnet. even though we had a few issues still ran a new PB of 8.20@166

after struggling with popping issues on higher boost, we went out last week with a set of mix 'n match Bosch leads we bought for less than $50. considering the other sets that were promised will be fine and cost over $200 a set we didn't expect much. we also decided to ditch the Race E85, for good old $1.20 a litre bowser E85. after getting some disppointing numbers back on the dyno, we had to take a few degrees of timing out etc because the fuel was not up to par with the Race E85. we didn't expect much. it was mainly about getting out there and just making sure the car didn't pop. 1st pass, 10.0@159mph, cold track and the car just spun the tyres, but, main thing was not a single pop. we were all ecstatic, even moreso when we seen the mph as we were not expecting that on a clean pass let alone a pass like that.
plus, we were running the street plugs and full exhaust (2 cats), Joe kept asking if we should take the pipes off and give it a go, considering it would be who would be putting them back on at the end of the night and i was feeling lazy so i said no.
at the end of the night the car also ran a 8.54, 8.45 and 8.42@163.99mph, that was only 2.5mph less than the best it's ever went with the good race fuel and it's also the best time it has ever run with the pipes on, looking at the 60's they were nearly a tenth slower than what we usually run with the pipes on. it was consistent and the main thing there was no popping.
Vince the tuner said the night before as we re-tuned it, that it sounded better and cleaner than ever. he said don't let the numbers the dyno was showing he said it had a 8.1-8.2 in it. i'm starting to think he was right. the car weighed 100lbs more with the pipes on and taking into account that the bowser E85 hasn't got the octane like the good stuff so it wouldn't pull as hard out the hole. we left the launch boost at the usual psi as on race E85. it would have been very interesting had we taken the pipes off and lifted the boost so it 60'd like usual. i'm thinking we could have PB'd.
going back out in a couple weeks, putting it back on a new Race E90 we have sourced. probably step the boost up from 30psi to 35psi. we are chasing 7's. and if all goes as smooth as it did the other day, we have a chance. here's some video of the other night

we took the Capri out again to Friday night, same tune as last time and on the E85 bowser fuel. we didn't get a chance to do the new tune on the good stuff.
it was a nice night for racing. however, we only got 3 passes, there was alot of cleanups. the funny cars, Top Fuellers etc slowed things down a but. we think we have found the limit of the pump E85 on 30psi, we were going to put another 3psi in but we didn't get another run. we are extrmemely happy with the little girl, alot of people criticise turbo's for not being consistent all 3 passes were within 5/100ths of a second, the first pass being the slowest as it was about 10 degrees warmer. ran a 8.42@164, then a 8.378@164 and a 8.370@164. we had alot of people coming up asking about the car, most called it the sleeper of the night, noone assumed it would run anywhere near what it does. which is what we like we got a few shakes of the head with people wondering how it all fit under the bonnet
we were hoping to go a smidge faster, but the 60's just weren't there, i put the boost up for the launches about 2psi, but, the fuel lacks the punch of the Race E85 we used to use and because of the lower torque output we can't get the 60's which is critical for the car as it doesn't have the top end charge like the big HP turbo cars. last Full Throttle Friday we were 60'in 1.36, we did a little better today with a 1.35 and 2 x 1.34's.
we seem to have got the tune for getting the car on boost pretty good. we had slight issues getting the car on the 2-step before, we leave on 5500rpm and 16psi. it's a big ask for a little 4L to get 124mm's of turbo spooling. but, we have it pretty much spot on now which is a big weight off the shoulders. no point having a race car if u can't cut a good light.
