Default ST170 engine anyone used one for conversion?

Hi;

I have sourced a st170 engine and am waiting for them to remove it, has anyone heard of anyone using this engine in anything other than a focus?

I have all the wiring loom and just wondering what i can chop off!!!
There are loads of control modules and someone said that it needs all of them to work!

I have looked through the haynes manual (no hope there) but the TIS CD is more helpful with some actual wiring diagrams!

Thanks, Steven Caine.

Hi Twins;

I have an old mk5 escort... i know its not brilliant but i cant afford the audi a4 i want. Its the xr3i cabriolet at the moment and i wanted to replace the engine befor it falls out and i want a project to keep me from slouching in front of the tv.

Hi K18NEO;

Is the person on here? or contactable with email or another forum? do you know much about how they dealt with the engine management?

I just want some first hand pointers of the engine management and the rest of the loom as i am told by a rumour that it needs the entire loom...

Thanks, Steven Caine.

Hi THIESKE

I am aware of the problem with the keys being required to start the car, so to solve that i need the key and the ignition barrel so i can wire them to the ecu as if it was still in the focus. A bit of a hassle really.

Why not run propepr aftermarket management? One that can also take advantage of the VVT?

Because there is no aftermarket management for the st170 VVT engine.

Also this would be expensive, probably around Ł500+ although this would be an attractive option because it would be so much easier!

Thanks for the idea. It would be nice if you could correct me and tell me there is management for the vvt but im pretty sure there isnt (yet).

Steven,

Dave Colledge from Retro Ford has put one in a MkII Escort using bike carbs. I dont know how he got around the PATS system, but the install was all pretty easy.

Give him a bell on 07813 436514.

Hi Carl;
EFI inlet?

the engine has VVT so this would have to be controlled otherwise the engine would just be useless.

PATS just wants to see that the correct code has been received from the key. The solution to this is to have the ignition barrel connected to the ECU and leave the key in in constantly and still start the car with the other key as normal. Or use the new key and barrel as a total replacement for the ones that i have currently.

Thanks for that simon, but i need to know how to use the stock inlet and ecu. Bike carbs tho? Interesting, never heard of that befor!

Will the inlet manifold not fit under the bonnet ?can you not use the existing loom etc?

I've got one and the 6 speed box, it's turbocharged though and the car is a Mk3.5 Fiesta. You can fit the engine into anything, it's no more a difficult task than installing a standard Series 3 Zetec.

I would recommend an aluminium flywheel and aftermarket clutch.

Hi excursion;

Impressive site im glad you posted it. I will look through it a lot more later. Im very impressed you also put the 6 speed gearbox in, with its interesting hydraulic gear selector. I shyed away from this as this is the first conversion ive done and so would like to gain confidence befor trying someting like that!

I am inspired and am looking forward to finally picking up the engine.

Thanks, Steven Caine.
