Reminds me of my apprenticeship days back in 97-2001, one of the last ships i worked on was an RFA ship. Radar one of some sort, that was a 3 engine change from the nucleular (bad spelling lol) power it was using.

My old man also used to travel the world as a 3rd engineer back in the 60-70's, then for some other companies, i'll pester him for some photo's.

*edit* Quality pics mate

I'd do it if i were you, you only live once. Mind you if you have a family/missus then it would be hard to consider.

How much does the flywheel weigh just out of interest?

And what sort of max RPM does it do? Just a few hundred I assume judging by the length of the stroke and its implications for piston speeds!

It ticks over at 350rpm, full chat is 500. The piston speed is 10m per second. stroke of the top of my head is about 800mm i think. As for the flywheel i cant remeber for definite but its either 2 or 4 tonnes. lol
The rubber coupling that mounts it to the gearbox weighs the best part of a tonne aswell.
The damper at the other end ( inside ) is 1 T + aswell.
Liners are about a tonne aswell.
Cylinder heads 750K Bare i think..dont quote me on this..

yeh its tempting. but being and engine man id get stuck with actually doing the work whereas they would normally wouldnt bother lol also your right, with the old ball and chain its tricky, bad enough as it is when i get called away for a stint but on the flip side if your at sea you know for sure its 3months on , 2 off etc. could probably plan a bit more etc..
The key is to go offshore onto the rigs , thats 2 weeks on , 2 off and mega coin, also tax free depending on where you go etc..

So did I, that's why I clicked the thread!

I used to do some part time work for the place that restored it when I was 15, so did a bit of work on that myself. Nothing major, but blast cleaned a few components, helped prep a few panels and detailed it at the end.

Only 2 mins from me

Sorry, slightly off topic, interesting thread!

Ive worked on a couple of ships last was an RFA ship, it always made me laugh how they just cut big fuck off holes in the bulkheads & decks to get stuff out. Engine rooms always facinated me, cool post
