Starting on the cage fabrication this saturday, so hopefully have a nice factory look to the design which will revolve the interior, as its all staying in the car (rear seats included, but nobody will ever sit there). Its a fast road car that ventures onto the track, not the other way around, so sticking to my guns on this and maintaining what works

Aye mate I know, but it would have been pointless for mine really, OMP cage wasn't it? I want to run more with the lines of the interior so it not seen as much really. Hard to do but possible. Tigging stainless I find quite easy, but the most I've done with cages is an offroad buggy Still, pretty strong
A mate has kindly surced several metres of DOM for me so I can get cracking on the mig, but I'll be giving him the duties of forming the main hoop.

Iv just looked into DOM steel and its a tube that has been welded then rolled to size this tipe of steel tube is never used it a cage as it has a seam that could fale when bent and crack . most cages are made from CD steel which was solid so no week spots in it only wot iv read on the net and wot custom cages us

Is cage for show or actual roll protection?
I think you'll need to use cold drawn steel which has no seams meaning no weaknesses

Not to my knowledge, DOM doesn't dent in the same drastic measures like ERW for example, its used in a lot of race cars. So I'm confident it'll be fine in a road car....unless you fancy subbing me for some T-45?

Not too sure to be honest fella, the idea was to have a nice rear section, but seems a little pointless. But will have to figure that one out to ensure it suits the rest of the interior. Give that German look to it

It was an OMP in that Focus you built that rolled wasn't it? Did well against that damage didn't it so they can't be that bad

Oh aye yeah, for sure! The damage was horrible, but from the look of pics of it in the scrap yard, the cage still looked in good-ish nick. Such a shame though

The way I've looked at mine, it'll have the basic hoop along the B-pillar, bars down from top of hoop to the rear turrets, bars from turrets back to bottom of hoop (triangle formation), strut brace which will sit neatly just behind the rear seats (attached to rest of cage not the turret suspension bolt) and then the front end will need to be decided on i.e. cutting dash or modifying the the pillar trim and hiding underneath there.
Plans of course, but it could all go to pot and end up looking like a Mad Max car

Aye we'll see how I get on anyway, the difference before is that you don't have to worry about your surroundings with an offrad buggy when building it The majority of it will just be tacked in place, if it can be removed it finish off, then it will. No big deal if not. Just can't be assed masking the whole car up to paint it

Roll cages don't have to be made from CDS - you can use ERW no probs so long as it conforms to BS1387 (for RACMSA events in the UK). Basically that will be scaffolding pole but it's often used for sprinkler systems or steam pipe too.

Don't know the standard for CDS off the top of my head but it's thinner walled because as you say CDS is stronger than ERW in like for like dimensions. As a result the cage is lighter.

Off roaders tend to prefer ERW cages as they are more likely to be used in anger but in such a way that they won't kill the car (i.e. low speed rolls down a hill). In these circumstances we would see witness marks where the cage had moved and touched the body (usually external cages on off-roaders) but the cage would have returned to it's original shape. CDS cages don't tend to bounce back if they have moved and will be permanently distorted.

That's why I'm using DOM, as its formed roughly in the same way as ERW but with slightly reinforced, stronger properties. Most strut braces on the market are made from DOM and countless race team cages are as well, so I won't have a problem with it. I even made the offroad buggy out of DOM, so no complaints here. If I didn't think something was of a satisfactory standard and safe, it wouldn't be on my car

Hey, you and your 4th gear can fuck right off!

1. I didn't rape your car because you'd cry if I binned it.
2. If I knew the way to Silverstone and didn't decide to take a detour, all would have been well....still got there before you though
3. We'll make sure on the next track outing

Got some work done today at my mates garage in Wrexham who kindly lets me use his welders , but unfortunately the pipework for my cage had not arrived in time to be tacked together. But I found some random piping of the same diameter (I think it was used originally for plumbing ) to be able to mock up the measurements, so all is full steem ahead. Should look really good with a tidy 8 bar configuration in the back with box sections fabricated in the double layer sections of the flooring, so the carpets will still hide the mounting points quite neatly.

The front section I didn't really get time to sort out because I got busy getting to grips with knocking this together out of stainless. But its been a while since I've built any intercooler pipework, so I've passed the swirl pot on to have the welds pressure tested to be on the safe side. Looks and should be fine though...burnt the base plate a little the first time round But final item turned out well I thought

Otherwise, just washed the car and got very drunk in Wrexham
