Thanks the thread was sort of for my own benifit as much as sharing it. As i said this is the first engine ive ever built with no hlep at all, so keeping an exact document of what im doing was helpful for me to look back and double check on stuff im unsure about.

Also i know its an aston engine, but i hoped i could show that almost any engine is basically the same, and that anyone with a bit of common sence and will to learn can do this sort of stuff.

Yeh, when she fired up it was a mixture of emotions, not the sort of engine you can go buy another one off of ebay

Thanks. well you may be supprised to know this is the first time ive ever rebuild an engine like this.

Ive done hand fulls of beetles, my S1 and the headgasket on the cossie with lots of help from a good mate. But this is the first time ive ever attempted anything like this.

So the way i looked at it was its simply nuts and bolts and marking positions and measuring things. Stuff we can all do!!

Ive posted this "resto" on the AMOC forum also and im causing quite a stir on there, a lot of them are up in arms that ive done this, but ive told them its not always as easy as handing a blank cheque to a "specialist".
Ok its an Aston Martin, but it still rusts, breaks down, needs servicing. To me its no different to a 1.3cvh engine, just with a pretty name!

Others have called me a revolutionary , and are dead chuffed if come along and stirred a few things up. My aim was to show people that anyone with a basic understanding and who has patience and can be metholodical can do this with out hearing comments like "ohh thats gna cost Ł50k if you do that"........balls i say!!

Well clutch still hasnt arrived, but heres some more pics i found pre resto.

Ive got over selling my 1968 mk1 mexico rep but why oh why did i ever sell my Series 1 RSturbo and the 1949 beetle, why why why

Yeh its very handy, it took me 3 days solid to dig it.

Its 7' deep, 4' wide and 7'long.
Concrete base
Concrete block work
3" angle iorn capping to locate false floor when not in use (yes i have fallen down it before fooking hurt)
2x 6' daylight fluressents
2x twin sockets

annoying thing is i had the mini digger out side the door on the trailer when i was digging it, but as it was inside and the oak beam at the front is only 6'5" i couldnt get it in there!

I welded the 3" angle iron round the top, one to finish it off and locate the 6"x"2 slats, but also with the intention to use one of those slidy jacks the MOT testers use. but after seeing the price of them i never bought one!

Also it flooded buy an inch yesterday after the torrential rain we had. its never done that in 6 years!! The house is still on the original well, as we have no mains services, and thats 18' deep so there must have been a hell of a lot od rain to make the water table rise buy 10' as the well normally only has 12" of water in it

The goods kindy secured buy TIFF, if any of you saw the plea for help in GD!

Well this is what Ł500 get you!

Old and new thrust bearing

old and new clutch

Apply grease to the arms

Fit springe, push into place with screwdriver, make sure they locate!!!

check it all moves as it should

fit clutch, remember to align the plate and use the marking you made or the fly wheel will be unballanced!!

Check its all tight and refit the gear box and the interior.

JOB FINNISHED

go for a test drive

(I must appologise for the state of the car its filthy)

This is its first outing so was a bit tence and took it steady. Dont want to rev it just yet, will check timing again tommrow and have one more look to see everything is as it should be!

i know what you mean about the 'Aston' crowd up in arms about the use of ones own spanners. there are quite a few in the Porsche forums the same mindset

Replacement of the tired rear springs

Now the hand book tells you you need to didassemble the rear suspension in order to change the springs......no you dont! Having a landrover, i have a heavy duty set of spring compressors which are much longer than the standard car items.
Simply jack up the car and support the chassis so the rear suspension hangs down on its own weight.
Bolt up the compressors, slide out spring, replace new spring.

screw wheel back on, job done. (appologies for the misfireing, its going in for its rolling session in the next few days for a digital set up, so should come out puring lke a kitten)

Measuring the new and old springs there was only 1/2" difference in unsprung weight, but once on the car there was a noticable lift of at least 2". The cars stance is now much better.
I suppose to save Ł170, you could always retemper the original springs buy applying lots of heat, ive done this a few times with other springs and it does work, obviously not as good as new springs, but still a good tip i believe.

As much as I love looking at all the restos on cossies and rst's and things, it makes a nice change to look at something a bit different to the norm!

Cool car. great read. amazing effort and cool photos!!

Be interested to see what it does on the Dyno. I don't think you will get near the factory figures though. I also heard they weren't accurate... but I was always led to believe Aston OVER estimated... any thing North of a real 250bhp is going to be a result mate. Not that it matters. Will never be a fast car... but it will always be a very very cool one. Love it.

A mate has an Oscar india. I much prefer this one though.

Just getting it booked in to the rollers, I went to engine advantages a few years back. (QUE - Countless slagging comments)

Personally ive never had an issue with them, the car was taken there, so regardless of how accurate the rollers are there, the only way to see a direct comparison is to use the same set of rollers!!

Yeh the oscars are nice, but they lost the styling ques. The 6cyl DBS is what the aston folf call last of the "proper" astons before they moved to newport pagnell and started on the V8's, nice cars but i think they were trying to look too much like the american muscle cars of the time!

I think the best "mod" on the car was turning it back to its original red.

Now ive got to get my head stuck into the RS1600i, id like to have it on the road for the summer ideally! And the Head Gasket on my landrover is long over due

Strictly Stuttgart for my toys.
with one exception, the unexplainable continued ownership of my first car a 81' mk3 escort XR3. that makes me smile and swear more than any other car ive owned.

anyway, sorry but i would not know where to start looking for Ferrari's to play with. Any year of Porsche 911 i can do, but i really enjoy this sort of car. (quick snapshot @ work with address' of neighbours yard removed)

my shell is pictured but just for info we recently supplied another resto fresh 1972 2.4 911S coupe, there is also a 1968-69 2.0s that may be for sale from a customer of ours. (in need of restoration)
another 2.4s which will be offered in the next month or so but i have not seen it yet its due to come in. also have a good contact for early Mercedes-Benz sl 60's 70's. incase the ferraris not a firm choice
