Project Ring-Pug! Updated 04/03/07 - Rear beam rebuilt!

Hopefully some proper updates this weekend, (fitting seats, diff, ordering more parts etc)
The brakes have got to go back as one side GTi-6 and one side normal 2.0 306 is no use (smaller piston and disc diameter), means I got to waste yet more time sorting brakes out Not very happy about that, but even more suprised for the poor lady I cought them off, as it was a Peugeot dealer who changed one of the calipers on her GTi-6 and replaced it with the wrong one!

I'm from Newcastle way, I used to live near Lightwood, at Meir Heath on Sandon Road a good 8 or 10 years ago
I'm now half way through fitting the new diff. I pillaged the 1.6 box for the shorter final drive and fitted that to the diff. I will then use the combination of 1.9 Gear ratios and 1.6 final drive which should give me pretty much the ultimate setup without going custom (the 1.9 has a longer first gear than the 1.6).
I don't know how much people charge to do the clutch on a 205 but it must be a lot I've spent 2 (fiarly lazy) days pulling apart the car and the gearbox still isn't off! I've removed inlet manifold, fuel rail, battery, battery tray, all air filter stuff (even that is awkard on a 205!), starter, hundreds of hoses and god knows what else.
According to Haynes ( ) the GTi is the only 205 that doesn't need the engine to come out to change a clutch!
Either way its an annoying, fiddly pain in the arse!

Gearbox is still in, the reason it wasn't coming off is that the offside driveshaft is stuck solid in the diff I've got the diff casing off and dismantled the innards of the diff, but haven't had time to get a decent extension bar through to whack it out! Thats all that is left holding the box on I think
What a nightmare and i'm too busy to finish it at the mo Should be on track later in the summer I hope

Gearbox is off and the new diff is built up. Just waiting to pick some new diff bearings up from Bernie (gearboxman) who is massively cheaper than buying them from Peugeot (They also take over a week to get them in from when you order!) Fitted the Griffiths Engineering gear linkage kit, so that should reduce the throw a bit
Also need a new o/s driveshaft as i've managed to crack the centre bearing somehow! Might as well stick a new clutch in there whilst the gearbox is off. I also took the rear engine mounting / centre bearing carrier off to get a better bushing fitted, maybe even solid mount the engine. This should make the gearchange better and stop the engine moving so much I guess!
Diff with 1.6 final drive fitted:
A pair of BE1 gearboxes:
Even with half of it removed the engine bay is still a mess

hi phil
i jumped in here for a look to see if you've been up to anythin much cos i was chattin to marty earlier bout goin back to germany
i'm thinkin of gettin my big front brakes fitted soon then was wondering about a wider rear beam...you know owt? is it that much better and helps with understeer?especially if stripped and less weight in rear?
if i do the brakes and beam i might get 2 cheap buckets...or even just 1 for me cos im selfish ... and then go tan you round the nurburgring
whats next for you? MI?

Hi mate, just got the gearbox back on today! What a bloody mission (space is a bit tight and the gearbox aint light at all!) Now using a 1.6 box with Quaife diff = top speed about 120mph on the limiter
Inlet manifold gasket should be in tomorrow, and I need a new driveshaft (cracked the centre bearing ) also hope to pick up an uprated lower engine mount in the next day or two so it all gets stiffened up a bit. Picking the subframes up tomorrow as well, then all I need is harnesses and to fit this plate i've made for the sunroof! Hope to have it driving again by the end of the week, before i head back to uni to finish my disseration and my final exams
I also stuck all the interior on eBay in the hope someone will come and take it away so I dont have to make a trip or two to the dump

Nope definitely wasn't me (like I would drive ont he road with slicks )
Chop, wider rear beam is just a 309 gti beam. No idea what difference it makes! I guess more grip..

Todays progress:
Rebuilt N/S inner CV joint
Cobbled a load of new water/oil/vacuum pipes together from bits off my old cossie
Setup the quickshift kit
Bought a new O/S driveshaft
Picked up and fitted an massively uprated lower engine mount (as good as a solid mount!!) Getting the old bushing out of the engine mount is a nightmare of a job with only a hacksaw, screwdriver and a hammer!
Tomorrow should see it all back together and running again including an oil change and I get my subframes on Friday so I can take a test drive

Ok, here goes a slightly drunken attempt at RingPug update...
The interior has been colllected and all gone!
Car is now fully running with 1.6 gearbox, Quaife diff, stripped out, new oil, oil filter, fuel filter, fuel line, track rod ends, wishbone pinch bolts, gearbox oil, Griffiths engineering quickshift, strut brace, relocated battery and I de-greased the interior from the previous seound deadening...
Here is my attempt at a 205 CSL:
It is really the template for my new roof panel which is being cut this week
Current interior:
Exterior:
This then reminded me to get rid of the fog light mounts ready for some brake cooling ducts, so out came the angle grinder on the fron bumper:
Here is a pic of the two toys in the garage as present:
Things left to do:
Bucket seat subframes (still waiting!!!!)
5 point harnesses
Fit new sunroof replacement panel
Suspension
Rolling road setup (ignition timing is well out)
Roll cage
Track days!!!!!!!

Cheers
Will be a while until my next update as the deadline for my dissertation submission is just over 1 week away Then I have my finals after that, then no more uni/exams ever
Just lots of messing with cars and track days!!! And i'll even be able to finish the mk1 Escort

Hi mate, I sanded them down to the bare metal (using a combination of power tools ) then went to the local motorfactors and bought a couple of tins of primer and some matt black paint.
Just made sure I gave them plenty of coats of each I wasn't too fussed as they are only track wheels, if I cared about them much i'd get them sandblasted and powder coated personally

Well, the 205 will be on track at Croft RS day at the start of July - looks like i'd better get my arse into gear and finish it! Need to fit a cage, harnesses, gti-6 brakes, battery box, some wet tyres and sort these bloody subframes out!

12 months later and I finally got off my arse and sorted it
Had a monster sesison on it in the last week and it is booked in for the MOT tomorrow, so i will update with some pictures!
For now here I was fitting Gti-6 calipers, discs and pads in the snow!
And here is one seat test fitted
It now has both seats fitted along with Sabelt harnesses etc
Also had 4 Eagle F1 GSD3's delivered today for road/wet track use £32 a corner including delivery from mytyres.co.uk Bargain!!!

Eagle F1s are fitted and alignment done, it feels much better now (and going from 185/55/15 remoulds to 195/50/15 Goodyears I should bloody well hope it does )
Lets hope it passes the MOT

Ordered some new parts for it today!
309 GTi rear beam (20mm torsion bars (18.9mm are std), 50mm wider track and a 20mm ARB gives a 42% increase in roll stiffness at the back end along with improved turn-in characteristics and an increase in grip to rebalance after loosing so much weight over the rear axle)
I also have 2 new brake compensators to pass the MOT
And solid rear beam mounts, along with uprated gearbox and upper engine mounts (already have the group a near solid lower engine mount!)
All this should lead to a might stiff car with some teeth loosening vibrations Then it is ready for uprated shocks front and rear along with adjustable camber top mounts

I just wire brushed them back to bare metal with an angle grinder, sprayed em with bog standard halfords spray on primer and then matt black spray. I didn't think it would last but when fitting the slicks none of the paint came off and they have been bashed around in the garage and are still fine Plus a re-furb is only a £5 spray can job!
Picked up the uprated rear beam today, fitting it tomorrow so I promise some more pics then
