Moonstone Blue 1990 MK2 Orion zetec turbo
... My past cars... a couple of MK2 Orions, a MK3, a UK Impreza Turbo, a Impreza Type R...
LOL, and now this... Back to a old faithful... mk2 Ford Orion...
The Type R was sold last August ( 2007 ), and me and the misses made our first step onto the property ladder... Had to be done ... so, the house is project number 1... ( just incase she reads this post lol ) project number 2... The MK2...
Plans for it are:-
Full respray in Ford Moonstone Blue, de-locked, S2 90's spec front bumper, turbo bonnet, Saff boot spoiler.
Engine wise, 2 litre zetec turbo...
Some more pics of the shell... very tidy, and a ideal starting point.
I purchased the MK2 before the sale of my Type R, so bored one day, the grinder came out for a quick slam... just to make it look alittle better, it was sorn'ed, so wasn't going anywhere... ( This was still at my mum and dad's, before the move )
While still at home, I had some 88 spec recaro's re-trimmed to match the rest of the interior alittle better... bolsters are slightly darker, but its something that can be sorted at a later date...
Only other plans for the interior are, to retrim the blue on the door cards, probably go grey with them, and to fit a grey dash I've got hold of...
So, fast fowarding to Oct last year...
Me and the misses were now in the house, and I was Scooby-less... The Scooby's replacement ( run-around/ workhorse is a 306 HDi estate )
The Orion, now got its own garage...
So, before I started to strip it, I thought it would be best to put a MOT on it... reason being, once its painted and the block is in, it will be run on Adaptronics engine management, with there being MOT still on it, it will just be a case of taxing and insuring it... so we can go straight out in it mapping it...
For the MOT, I put some new 60mm Pi springs on it, and 2nd hand Koni shocks...
How it sat... errrrrrrrrrm, higher...
Who cares, it drove mint to the MOT station and flew through its MOT...
I'll pop back on later to add loads more pics and continue with the write up... then I'll just add bits as and when they happen...

And on again... A couple of pics here of the donor car... a 2 litre Mondeo bought from my local salvage yard... Ł125.00 quid... a runner with rear bumper damage only.
I had the engine & gearbox, & a few other bits and bobs came off for other people.
I weighed it back in for Ł80.00 quid...
Next job was to get the engine out of the Orion... 1400cvh... run well, but went straight in the bin... easily done.
Next to turn up for the Orion was a set of Mondeo 16 inch 5 spoke alloys...
Wheels were tidy for the money, the tires were bald, but being 50 profile were no good anyway, so I had the tires took off, I planned to buy 4 new 195/45/16's, but as you will later see plans changed for the rims. Which was a shame as I had the wheels colour changed to make them look alittle different from the norm... Really thought they'ed suit it.
So... a couple of weeks after having the Mondeo rims refurbed... these come up forsale on here...
All 4 wheels are very tidy, with very few marks... fitted with 4 Goodyear eagle F1's, 2 brand new, 2 not so good... So I decided to buy another 2 brand new Eagle F1's. So when the Orion comes out, atleast its got 4 good tires fitted, which should help keep it out of ditches...
I am gonna have the wheels painted, not 100% sure on the colour for now. But I do think the Borbet C's will suit the Orion very nicely once its all complete.
With the Mondeo wheels no longer being needed, i'll have to try my luck on e-bay with them...
Next bargain I picked up for the Orion was a pair of Escort Cossie front brake caliper, these again were off here... ( cheers again Martin )
I have trial fitted these, so they are now back off to be prepped for paint.
So, the car is now sat pretty much stripped for paint...
Glass is all out, interior is all stored up in the loft. I've just gotta organise it all now, then I might be able to empty the boot...

I have now turned my attention to the underside of the car... the car only needs a couple of plates on the front pannel, that is it!!!
I have started cleaning up the underside, I have primmed under 1 wheel arch, then gone over it with some grey stone chip... next up is to paint it in moonstone blue, I will get the whole underside to this standard before the body colour goes on...
I've even started tarting up some 2nd hand Koni shockers... although I'm not 100% happy with the colour...
These quick pics will just give you a idea of what they were like before and after... I'm not going concours on the car, but its gotta be clean...
A big improvement I think, these were wizzed over with a wire brush on a grinder back down to bare metal, quickly primmed, then I added a couple of coats of yellow spray paint... although I may try another yellow yet???
A couple of pics of the Mondeo block, I won't start stripping this until the car is back from paint...
Also picked up a S2 gearbox off here... hope it will stay in one peice for a short while, fingers crossed...
How it sits now...
Thats about it for now, hoping for some steady progress and hopefully picking up some bargains on the way.

Cheers for the comments... I'm happy with the shell, couldn't have got much better for Ł200.00 quid.
Heres the original shell I bought for my project, this was still a tidy shell, but it wanted abit more welding doing than the blue one and we think it had been in a bump at some stage, so it was stripped and weighed in...
That was another reason I had the blue one... the black one above needed new window rubbers front and back, now these worked out at something silly like Ł90 quid for the pair...
The ones in the blue one are like brand new...
I now have boxes of spares, which can't be a bad thing with a car of this age...
Heres a link for those who might be interested... This is the ECU we will be running the zetec turbo with...
http://www.adaptronic.com.au/products-e420c.php
I run a Adaptronics unit on my last project... http://bbs.scoobynet.com/projects-40...diy-style.html
It was spot on, a great peice of kit... my Mapper ( the brains behind it all ) did a awesome job on it...
Andy ( mapper, engine builder, painter lol ) will be helping me along the way with this project too...

Sorry for the delay in a update...
Abit of welding has been done... looking alot better now I think...
More has been done since, just not quite up to date on the pics yet...
Started the task of cleaning up the underside... was quickly grinded up with a wire brush bit... primed, stonechiped, then brush painted Moonstone blue... its only its 1st coat, but I'm chuffed with the finish... Will look clean once finished...
It will look better once the Koni's are fitted all round, I also need to spend some time on preping the rear arms up. Gonna paint them black and polybush them up...
Rear drums will be refurbed inside and painted up black on the outside to keep up the appearance for now until a cheap rear disc conversion turns up...
That can be done at a later date once its all running etc...
I have also painted the petrol tank up in silver... sorry no pics for now...
But as you can see, its slowly making good progress...

A mini update for now on the Orion... as its been that long... Hoping to get alot more pics taken over the weekend of my slow progress...
All the welding is now complete bar rear arches which are being repaired by the guy I've got spraying it... So these will be done when it goes for paint.
I'm now concentrating on getting the n/s floor finished, before the big turn around in the garage to get the o/s finished, I'm sick of pushing it...
Anyway, my progress on the n/s for now...
Above... n/s/f all painted up. And Koni's all repainted and fitted... Debating replacing all the brake pipes now, and changing the flexi hoses for Goodridges... ŁŁŁ
Shafts, bottom arms etc will get painted up next once I've ordered up a full set of Deflex bushes...
Really chuffed with my work, I think it will really make the car once its all complete.
I know metalic paint needs a clearcoat over the top, but do I really need to bother with it on the underside... The metal was all treated, primed, stonechipped, and finally 3 coats of base coat were applied by brush...
I ain't going concours with the Orion, but I do want it to look tidy, and compete in the odd show and shine event...
Sorry thats all for now, I will get some more pics and work done over the weekend.

More pics of the work so far... slightly better with some extra light... still phone camera sorry...
Floor all welded up... 1st coat of paint going on
Its had a tiny plate near seat mount welded from the top
Another plate on rear n/s floor pan... These had already been done on the car, there all solid so I've just added alittle stonechip over the top.

Do I need to put a clearcoat over the top of the base coat on the underside or can I get away with it...?
