Escort stage rally car

workshop is now built and the car is back home - still got alot of interior stuff to fit into the workshop, and alot of stuff in storage, but we are getting some progress
SO as a coming home sort of present I bought her one of these
Not sure if its what I really wanted, but after seeing Andy Gallacher launching his focus with one of these in, maybe its not a bad unit, alot bigger than a std item, but not as big as the 8.5".

Im not a fan of R&D at all , mainly due to their customer service, seen many issues with the 6 speed box, but after watching AG launch a 700+hp car on slicks, can you really go wrong with that front diff is what I decided ? i dont know - I hope im right, though im not brutal with transmission.
What did you give for yours if you dont mind me asking ?pm me if you like.

ok, been looking at this ar still, and as slow as its going, im still plodding along with it, im managing to get about 3 hours a month or so on it lol !
I sold the R&D front, as basically it would just be sat in my workshop for ages doing nothing, and decided on another front diff avenue, I had seen it done on a large hp rallycross car and thought hmmmm.
If a std 4x4 rear diff will take + 400hp (in 4wd trim) then it would be more than fine if it would work as a front diff.
here is the progress.....
slightly wider than an 8.5" from memory, and will have to make a new front crossmember bit looks like it will fit really nicely.

Love that pic, something about the type of car lurking undernieth lol

it looks like a viable option and thanks to you it seams to be measuring up well
At least one thing, you will know when you get your diff back, that its had its oil removed, cleaned up inside and inspected, its in very good condition, and will have all new oil in it!
The least i can do for the loan.

bearings will not be a concern at all, originally, my concern was the fact that the pinion will be turning the crownwheel on the wrong side, after a lot of research into motorpsort diffs, and people who have used rear diffs in the front, my conclusion was pretty simple, I have a car that in full spec will probably do no more than 2000 miles a year (pretty much the same as most peoples cosworths lol)
So, if the diff wears out, I have to spend another Ł100 on another, bit of a no brainer really (as long as you keep the diffs standard and do not modify them).
but from the people I have spoken to, they come to no real harm.
maybe it running them backwards would not last as ford intended, but its nothing like the milage ford wanted from them e.g. +100,000 miles in its life, vs my 2000 a year for maybe 3/4 years.

Thanks, but i wouldnt say stunning, ive seen and had some awsome machining done, all mine is some bits for my own car done on a lathe that was built in 1960.
The time it took me, well, I won't go into that, but manually measuring and cutting to 0.01 of a mm is very time consuming, the second one took me about a1/3rd of the time of the firat one as i thne had something to measure off.
Its all part of the enjoyment caliper mounts next on the milling machine
I think I should have got into machining as a career, i might have been good at it if someone could have taught me properly.

Nice bit of turning there Mark
I bough myself a lathe last weekend but for now i have only gone with a mini lathe to see if its something i really get into,
It's a 7x12" so its just 20mm too small on the swing to turn a brake bell so a bit gutted but it was very cheap and came with 4 jaw chuck and tailstock chuck and centres etc but i have already almost double my costs with decent tools and the best bit by far is the quick change tool post. (not yet fitted in pic below)
I am currently just turning some more bladed anto roll bar drop links in stainless steel as you can turn ss on a mini if you take your time, but just as i was finishing the first one the tool dug in as i cut too deep and damaged to end of the droplink with the chuck teeth so was gutted but it takes practice and as you say, plenty of time and patience
Turned these out of a left over bit of 5/8th alloy hex the day i got it to see how easy things were to do
They have no purpose what so ever, i just wanted to turn something with my new toy

Mark,
You strip anodise off with a caustic bath, this strips and etches the ally, quick rinse, into the electro bath for an hour, rinse, dye for 15 mins then seal for 30 mins the hot pot....
Painting the workshop out at the min but the anodise setup is accessible....
