Default resizing software - batch conversion

i've got shed loads of digi photo's in various folders that i want to resize for storing on a memory card.

i've got a little box that plugs into the tv with the memory card in it, and you can do a slideshow on the telly.

my original pics are 4 and 6 megapixel files, so have a large file size, when all that you can see on telly is 640 x 480. so i want a program that will convert them down to that size.

all i have for resizing is an old copy of paint shop pro, but you have to open each picture first, resize it, then save as somewhere else.

any one have any recomendations, prefferebly free downloads?

On another note...

Is there any function in photoshop that can do this?

Hate resizing 20/30 individual files one after the other, surely ther is something that can do 10 at a time or so?
