For the couple of weeks after the track night, it basically just got driven and not alot else, and she was looking rather sorry for herself, and with the Motor World show on the Sunday, I decided I should give her a right good clean (well, I did have the Standard Class Show & Shine to defend! Oh no, whats happened to me! I've turned into a Bufty :blub: Well, on the Saturday, I spent 5 hours cleaning her inside and out, and the usual suspects helped me out (Mick, Jamie, Big Chris, Kev. As always, cheers guys!)

Gotta say, it's the first time I've ever polished the boot floor of a car!

And on Sunday at the Motor World show, I won 1st Prize in Standard Show & Shine, so was well chuffed with that!

Here's some pics from the show:

And here beside my mates 1.1 Pop Plus Mk2, and another Pop Plus Mk1 running Mk1 XR2 running gear:

And then some beside my Bro's Jetta GTI:

I just got some pics just a few days after the MW show, she's looking a bit more grubby than she did at the show (due to going for a drive after the show, lol )

I went for a run the other night, and took some pics, but they most of them were crap, but I really liked this one:

Well, thats how she's sitting just now, she'll soon be off the road for winter (end of October when the tax runs out) and then I'll be starting to get the bodywork really sorted, get all the little dinks & dents taken out and a fresh coat of Diamond White on her, and hopefully a new set of lights all round, really freshen her up!

Need to get the bay sorted up a bit better too, think I'll get the rocker cover powercoated, as the painted one looks alright, but isn't really that durable, as you can see in the pics, its looking grubby (and it was only repainted about 8 weeks ago!!)

So, thats my little XR2 as she sits just now.

Cheers guys

8th October
Well guys, a little update for you all

I've got a mag feature with FastFord, and the photographer and the journo will be coming to see the car on Monday 16th.

So after the big garage sort out (thats a whole other thread ) we got the car into the garage to get it sorted for them coming.

Went and got a new starter from Shandon Electric (good bunch of guys) Ł35 with my old starter in exchange.

Then got the exhaust off so that we could sort the blow from it, and change the starter, only to find the exhaust has split in a few places

As you can see, the splits are VERY bad, and all of them are along manufacturers welds/seams.

This manifold is only 8 months old, and been onthe car 6 months, and has only done about 6000miles.

I've contacted RallyDesign as thats who I bought it through, and sent them the above pics, just waiting to see what they are gonna say, basically, I just want a replacement manifold so my car is ready for the shoot.

So just waiting now.

9th October
Got most of the standard interior back in the car now, just gotta put the little plastic bits that the parcel shelf mount onto back on and thats it done inside

After that it's a case of starting to clean it all up and waiting to see whats happening with the exhaust.

14th October
Alright the progress so far guys:

I contacted Ashley direct on Wednesday to see what was happening with the manifold.

Bloke at Ashley says "Give me a couple of hours and phone back, just wanna have a good look at these pics and contact my manager"

Alright, no problem, so I phone back later:

Ashley: "Ah yeah, the manifold has been heat wrapped"

Me: "Yeah, so?"

A: "So thats what's caused the manifold to crack, the heat has caused the metal to go brittle and the lack of movement in the system has cracked it"

Me: "Yeah, but that still shouldn't happen on a manifold thats only 6 months old. Most importantly here, I want a new manifold under warrantee"

A: "They aren't supposed to be heat wrapped, so we wouldn't cover it under warrantee"

Me: "I was never informed that they shouldn't be heat wrapped, you or RallyDesign have never specified to me that it shouldn't be heat wrapped"

A: "Well, you will have to take that up with RallyDesign then"

Me: *phone down* *calls RallyDesign*

The bloke who had been dealing with it for me wasn't in, so was told that he would phone me back first thing Thursday morning.

9.10am Thursday morning:

RD: "Hi Chris, Andy from RD, I heard you spoke to Ashley, what'd they say"

Me: *tells him*

RD: "Nah, thats not right, first time I've ever heard of that, let me go speak to Ashley and see what we can do for you"

Me: "Cheers!"

20 mins later

RD: "Hi Chris, Andy again, I've spoken to Ashley, and we will get you a new manifold tomorrow so you have it in plenty of time for your photoshoot on Monday"

Me: "Fantastic Andy, thanks very much, you've been an absolute legend!"

So folks, the moral of the story is, RallyDesign are an absolute TOP bunch of blokes, who have really helped me out, and again, I am happy to recommend them to anyone! Always had good service from them!

RallyDesign =

And as for Ashley, I've always been a fan of them, but after this, fuck them, fucked me over big time, and I've spent a few quid with them, along with my brother and mates. Badly made product and they will do whatever they can to screw you out of warrantee

Ashley =

So, the manifold arrived, and is now on the car.

Most of the car has been polished up, rocker cover, alternator braket, block, head have been repainted, any bare wiring has been retaped.

Continue on with it tomorrow, FastFord will be here about midday on Monday, so the countdown is on.

16th October
Well, the shoot was done today with FastFord, so just a case of waiting to find out when the car will be in the mag

Well, a tad outta date again!

12th November
Well, plans have changed for over the winter, the bodywork is good enough at the minute to last another year before being freshened up.

So, this winter it'll be new discs (as the last ones have cracked, on that, don't buy drilled discs, only grooved) and for these, I'll be getting Tarox G88's.

And some new suspension, I was originally looking at the Spax PSX kit, but I've been told that a set of Bilstein shocks & Eibach springs would be better, so I'll probably go with that.

Anyway, thats the XR2 all tucked up in bed for winter:

See there is an XR2 in there

So, thats her for the next few months, all tucked up in a nice dry garage, covered in bubble wrap to try and keep any more scratches and stuff happening to her while she's away.

22nd December
Well, it's been nearly 2 months without the XR2, and by God I miss it.

Anyhoo, I've priced up and I'm gonna go for the Spax PSX suspension, heard good comments about it from multiple people, and ticks all the boxes for me. It's top adjustable, a quality product and not too low.

I'll get them ordered in a couple of weeks, don't wanna leave myself toooo skint for the whole of January.

Next thing was I bought some steel wheels, and these ARE NOT early XR2 steels, these are Mk3 Escort Ghia steels.

I'm gonna get them widened, 7's on the front & 7.5 or 8's on the rear and use these as my daily wheels, and have a minty set of pots for shows.

So I went to a propeller manufacturers thats right beside my mates bodyshop and spoke to the guys in there if they could do the work for me, but they don't wanna take them on just incase they don't get them done right, so no bother there, I'll organise something with a guy I know in Holland at some point to get them sent over to the place he knows, but it won't be for a month or so yet.

Also, my bro told me today thats he's getting me some gauges for the car for my Christmas present (he's getting the oil ones, and I'll buy the Voltmeter myself):

TIM Gauges, Oil Pressure, Oil Temp & Voltmeter

I really like the look of these, matches in with the standard ones not too badly and they aren't in your face at all, which is good.

We've been talking over a few ideas of where to put them, I'll not be taking out the headunit, so there's out, in the glovebox was the next idea and it may go there, but I've got 2 spare dashes so gonna experiment on them and see what I like.

Bloody hell! Just realised that this hasn't been updated for nearly 2 years!!!

Hooooooooooooooge update time!

The mag feature March 2007:

3rd March 2007
Picked up some Leda suspension today
22 point adjustable
Camber adjustment on the front
280lb front
650lb rear

6th March 2007
While I was working late tonight, my bro Mick went across the road, and got my XR2 out of my mates garage.

First time in 4.5 months that this has seen light:

He connected the battery back up, primed the fuel pump for 30 secs, turned it over a couple of times, and then......fired up straight away! And ticked over PERFECTLY, fooking hooray for TB's I can tell you!!

He also got a couple of pics of it beside his Mk1 Golf GTI:

I'm booked on a rolling road day this weekend, and then a trackday in April, so I really can't wait to get this back out and on the road again!!!

The Leda's are gonna make such a difference, it's gonna have the handling to match it's power now, really can't wait

11th March 2007
Well, just back from the rolling road day up at Star Performance, and the results are.....

176bhp @ 7410rpm (109@wheels)
128lb/ft @ 5840rpm

So, I'm MEGA chuffed with that, I was only expecting it to be about 160 at the fly, so really chuffed with it!

A vid from today:

And my graph:

17th March 2007
Well, tonight I decided I'd get my suspension changed over to my new Leda's, so got the car into my mates garage (as my uncles Mk2 Escort is in mine just now) and started to strip off the old suspension.

Here's the old Jamex springs compared to the new 650lb Leda springs:

And then, while stripping off the passengers side, I pulled the spring off, and I was greeted by this:

Which, is a bit of a bugger TBH, but not a biggy, got another 2 XR2's out the back, so I'll strip the axle off one of them, clean it, paint it up and get it on tomorrow

18th March 2007
Well, been working on the car (Well, the axle) all day, and here's the progress pics:

Well, first, a quick pic of my Leda front shocks

Got the axle off the car, and then over to my own garage (car is in my mates garage just now)

Started to get it cleaned up, going for the polished look

Mick prepping up the scabby bit to get welded:

My mate Jooles did the welding, fucking superb welding, smooth as

The rusty bit all repaired up:

We also decided, that because the car is going to have far stiffer suspension, and be getting alot more track time this year, that we would put in some strengthening plates underneath the suspension cups, just to make sure they don't shear off.

Used a bit of heavy duty metal sheet, cut, shaped and welded it into place:

Once that was done, we grinded down all the welds and chopped off any extra bits of metal from the strengthening bits.

Then we hung the axle from the roof and got it ready for paint:

A couple coats of primer onto the axle:

Even with just the primer, you can barely see the strengthening plates

And then, gave it a few coats of hammerite blue (gotta love the hammerite blue!)

28th March 2007
Well, tonight, I got some work done, as over the weekend I was working in the garden, started rebuilding the axle:

Got the backing plates on

Put the poly bushes in the tie bar's and the panhard rod and then put them onto the axle with new bolts & nuts all round.

Also got new brake cylinders, brake shoes, brake lines, braided hoses, and a new set of wheel bearings, so the back brakes should be sweet now

14th April 2007
Well, over the last few days I've been starting to get the suspension on:

My new 22 point adjustable Leda all built up:

My mate gave my some Deflex poly bushes, the top strut ones (I was needing new ones anyway, so, cheers Jewels!)

Front end all fitted up:

Rear spring with the top Deflex bush

And it all fitted up and the car brought home: HOW LOW!!!!!!!

When I was fitting them up, I cranked on the camber to see what it was like:

Thats fucking nuts!!!

Now obviously I'll not be running that much camber, thats was my just messing about.

The car was only thrown back together to get it home, so all the suspension will be back off it (as I noticed I put the fronts on the wrong end, the adjuster is hitting off the brake line ) and it's getting new brakes on the back end (cylinders, lines, shoes etc)

17th April 2007
Just to show how low the car actually is:

Old Suspension:

New Leda's (also notice my mate Stu in the background doing the Big Box Little Box, Big Fish, Little Fish dance :blub: ):

And the rear axle:

Never really got much done last night, but the brakes (new lines, braided hoses, cylinders, shoes, and new bearings) will be getting done this week, getting it ready for the track day next week.

30th April 2007
Well, over the last week, me & Mick had been getting my XR2 ready for a track day that was on at Crail on Saturday, and we got it finished at midnight on the Friday night/Sat morning.

Got the car up there, and it performed spectacularly well.

The Leda's along with the Yoko A032R's was superb, AWESOME grip and very good feel, the car was flying, keeping up with my mate in his 280bhp EVO IV. Very little bodyroll from the car, but I could have done with putting on some more camber, and the front tyres were getting tucked under a bit.

Anyhoo, here's some pics of the day

At this point, my bro Mick took it out, was going well, but the tyres tucked under during a corner, and he hit a bump, threw the car off balance and due to it being so stiff, jumped off and he hit the tyres. No major damage, smashed the bumper, lights, bent the front panel, wings & bonnet. But my panel beater mate has already been out and checked it, the wings are repairable, I already had a spare bonnet anyway, so just a new front panel, bumper & lights and it's sorted. Got it back into the pit area, ripped the lights out, pot riveted the front end of the kit back on, and got the car back out:

And the video:

But, mega oil surge problems ended the day, with the big ends rattling, I coasted back to the pits and just before the pit lane, Mr Conrod had a disagreement with Mr Sump and he then decieded to leave the establishment

No worries though, it'll be sorted soon enough, but this time with a baffled sump and oil catch tank with a return to the sump, should sort out the surge problems. Now me & my bro have really pushed a standard bottom end as far as it'll go without doing anything to it.

Yeah wasn't the greatest day for the XR2, but I loved it, had a great laugh, the car performed superbly, and I can't wait to get it back on track!

More updates to come!

7th May 2007
Well, Mick being the absolute fucking LEGEND that he is (and if ANYONE has ever had doubts about asking Mick to get some work done [he's the one who runs S&M Motorsport] then they just need to look at these pics and realise the quality of the work he does), he got stuck into the XR2 over the weekend, and here is the state that I left the engine in

The back end of the sump:

The front of the block:

And number 3 rod & piston:

Quite impressive TBH, think I might have it framed and put up on the wall

Well, if your gonna do it, do it right!

I should be picking up a nice 2.0L at the end of the month , so thats sorted, organised with my mate Jewels (who did the welding on my axle) to do the welding on the baffles for my sump, and me & Mick have been talking, we're gonna put in another oil breather into the rocker cover on the opposite side to where it is originally, so that it has two, and that any oil surging in the rocker cover and get out no matter which side it's at, and return to the sump (and oil returns will be put into the sump too)

Well, here is the pics of the damage (the pics actually look alright, but then Mick did hammer it back out pretty decently on the track day)

Into the garage and starting to be stripped:

The front cross member, mint! Not a mark on it:

Same with the inner wings:

Battery tray will be removed and relocated to the boot:

Front stripped down:

Fooked engine out:

Empty bay

Rolled outside to be jetwashed:

All nice and clean:

Ready to go:

My mate Stu being Chief Chopper

Spot welds drilled out, and then the front panel chopped:

Mick & Stu working on the front end:

Front panel completely removed:

And thats it so far, the brand new Ford front panel was quickly setup to the car just to see how fit was, and it's looking mint, work will be continuing tomorrow

10th May 2007
Had a bit of quick work on the car tonight:

Battery tray removal, spot welds drilled out, and then using a panel chisel:

The battery will be moved to the boot.

The condition of the inner wing below the water trap that is the battery tray:

Not too bad considering it's 22 years old.

Mick cleaning up:

And got some Waxoyl:

And it got heavily sprayed down the chassis rails, front cross member, still got a good bit left, so it'll be going everywhere

13th May 2007
Mick, Stu & Me made some progress on the car today:

Mick cleaning up the seams to be welded:

New Ford Front panel set into place with the bonnet:

Stu tacking the new front panel into place:

After ALOT of fucking about, pushing here, pulling there, we all got the panel sitting mint, some pics showing the gaplines:

Passengers side wing/bonnet:

Drivers side wing/bonnet:

Scuttle panel/bonnet:

Checking the shutlines to the indicators/headlights, and again, they're all mint!

The Ford sticker that was on the front panel

Stu welding the original wing to the new Ford front panel:

The welds ground down, we drilled out the original spot welds, then welded back in their place, so we've been able to keep the original Ford stamp on the wing 8)

And thats it so far 8)

13th August 2007
The car as it's sitting the now, the grey primer on the front wing was where the panel work had been started, a light skim of cataloy was put on, but the guy who's doing the work for me said it was shitey stuff, so that will be redone:

The worst bit on the car, new panels will be ordered up ASAP:

All the pink dots you can see are where there is dents in the car, these will all be removed:

After all the panel work is done, it'll be stripped right back, and then painted inside, outside and underneath 8)

16th August 2007
Some update pics:

The front wing was sorted:

And a bit on the roof:

3rd September 2007
Well, some more panel work has been happening:

Well, got stuck into the battery tray location to see if it was needing chopped out and plated, but it's only needing a few wee spots, and a quick skim of cataloy and it'll be mint:

My new big box of painting goodies, got these the other day, all the stuff needed to paint it:

The front pass wing, one of the worst bits on it, been worked on and it's nearly done:

This bit here was damaged in the Crail smash and also about 2 years ago my mum was driving the car and hit it here too, so it's all sorted now:

And I'm replacing the Zetec with my new power source, DOG POWER!

And thats it so far, just working on the panel stuff the now, nothing exciting, but I'm happy to be seeing progress

30th December 2007
Well, all thats happened lately is that I've bought some bits.

Got a full safety devices cage, and bought a external fuel swirl pot.

Also had ANOTHER guy out who's gonna do the panel beating/paint work for me, and me & Mick have already done work for him, so be better do it, just waiting on a final price from him before he does anything.

2nd January 2008
Well, here's at least something for you's to look at:

My new swirl pot:

And my Safety Devices cage:

And I've yet to pick them up, but I've gotten myself a set of EVO V Recaro's to fit in it 8)

16th February 2008
Well, got my new seats today, Recaro's from an Mitsi EVO V

When I paid for em a while ago, I was told they were a bit rough, but, they are just about MINT, love em!

Also, thats the garage just about totally cleared out, so the car will be in shortly to get sorted 8)

26th February 2008
Well, the car went into the garage last week, and it went up onto axle stands:

How it looked inside:

The engine bay:

Rocky decided that my new seats were his new place in the garage:

It was my engagment party at the weekend, and I had family staying with me from down south, so I wasn't working on the car all weekend, but Mick being the absolute legend that he is, got stuck in and this is what he got done:

Bay all stripped and the front suspension & associated gubbins off:

Interior all stripped, all sound deadening removed, all seam sealer removed and the seams sprayed with zinc primer:

He'd removed all the sound deadening from the boot and started on the seam sealer:

And here's the extent of the rust:

Both of these bits are on each side of the Ford jacking points, which just gather shite all about them anyway, and consider the car has basically been sitting about outside for the last year.

And here's last nights progress, cleaning up the seam sealer, fucking right pain in the arse of a job as the seam sealer is so thick in points, took me about 2 hours just to get these bits done:

That looks like serious rust in the last pic, but it's not, it's just the way the pic is.

And thats it, be back down tonight to be scraping away at seam sealer again

28th February 2008
Well, on Tuesday night, got more work done, but nothing major, and never got a chance to put the pics up, so here's what got done then:

And here's todays/tonights progress, Mick was working on it during the day and my mate Davie was down for a while too helping out as well:

Got all the seam sealer out of the boot, the water bottle holder removed, and then all sanded down:

All the seam sealer removed and the bulkhead sanded down:

Just waiting on the correct size plates getting made then the cage can start to be fitted and then we can also start go primer up the interior too

29th February 2008
Was down working on it some more last night, sanded down the rest of the seams, and got them covered in Kurust.

We then got the car up as high as we could so we can get stuck into the floor.

Sorry for the pic quality, only had my phone with me.

6th March 2008
Mick had stripped off the pass. side arch and here's what lurked underneath:

And today when I got into work, this was waiting for me:

Footrest for the pass. side, it's all blue cause its covered in the plastic stuff the now.

9th March 2008
The few holes that were in the floor around the Ford jacking point, instead of cutting and patching in a few wee ones, Mick and my mate Stuarty cut out a decent sized plate:

Mick had cleaned up all underneath the car on the passengers side, and covered it all in Kurust (thats why it's all that black/purplely colour)

Mick had also cleaned up all the front arch, and again, Kurust'd, we're gonna stitch weld in here:

And the panel welded back up, all the welds ground down and a coating of zinc primer, this will also get a very light coating of catty just to leave a really good finish:

I'm HUGELY happy with how this has turned out, a complete credit to the quality of the work Mick and my mate Stuart (who is the welder) have done on the car.

It took most of today to get this panel in right, but as Mick said to me, rather spend a day getting it right, rather than just quickly fannying it up.

So, thats it for tonight, I'll be back up at the garage tomorrow

12th March 2008
Last night, Stuart got the stitch welding done on the front passengers side arch:

Nice smooth welds from Stu as always 8)

And done on the inside:

5th April 2008
Well, more work lately, but nothing really worth taking pics, but was down today and got some pics:

Drivers side arch, just about finished and ready to be stitched:

The pass. side arch seriously covered in some Kurust:

And the cage mounting/strengthening panels, both on the pass. side:

Thats it really, but I'll be back down tomorrow, so hopefully some more pics then

19th April 2008
Passengers side front arch in white high build primer, really happy with how this is turning out :

My new Wilwood bias valve:

My new Escort Cossie discs:

Compared to the standard sized XR2 discs:

My new calipers, originally I was meant to be getting Escort Cosworth stuff, but couldn't in the end, so I'm now using Jaguar XJ6 front calipers, which are a tiny bit bigger than EsCos stuff, the piston size is about 60mm wide, compared to about 55mm on the EsCos calipers

And compared to the standard XR2 calipers:

So, really with them can't wait to get them on the car, but loads of stuff to do before then!

20th April 2008
Today my mate Jools came round to weld in the rest of the cage mounting points:

Jools getting stuck in:

The drivers side rear panel:

The pass. side front panel for the front roll bar

And the cage sitting in the car:

Mick also started to make up the mounting for the battery box today, so some good progress today

30th April 2008
Started to prime up the inside now:

All the stitch welding finished now too

7th May 2008
The holes for the cage are now all drilled, and it bolts in fine, also, most of the interior has had at least 1 coat of primer.

Boot got a coat of primer last night:

Gonna be taking a few days off next week to try and make sure we can get the car ready for FITP.

9th May 2008
Got the car up to the bodyshop last night.

On my mates trailer, just about to head off (sorry about pic quality, it's off my phone):

5th June
Well, it's gonna be a wee while longer before the XR2's on the road, so thought I'd show the bodywork so far

Here's a pic of it just as we had dropped the axle & all the other gubbins at the back:

Well, the underside is just all sanded down, and with most of it in at least one coat of primer, it's actually looking like we're making progress finally!

It'll get another sand down and another few coats of primer (ran of out primer last night) and it should be ready to get the spray sealer onto the underside.

The car over at BG Bodyshop, the front & rear arches have been flared:

Decieded on using Escort Cosworth wheels, so tried them on to see how they were sitting:

This is the pic I've already put up, with the new arches that have been put on the car, can you guess what they are?

Dunno if anyone guessed right, but they are Mk2 Golf front arches:

I LOVE this pic

The rear arch on, you can't really tell from this pic, but Brian @ BG Bodyshop had to use quite a bit of the Mk2 Golf front wings that I bought to get them fitting in perfectly:

The wings being cataloyed to make them all smooth

Then last night, we were up to get it to a rolling shell again, as it's needing to get back down to Mick @ S&M Motorsport so he can get some more work sorted out that he needs to do.

Got it dropped down onto the wheels and couldn't resist getting some snaps

And the RS16i splitter that will be fitted:

I am completely over the moon with how it's looking so far, it's looking so much better than I ever imagined it would! And thats saying something considering how high my expectations were!

All the kit holes have been removed, the only original kit being left is the rear spoiler, and I'll be using XR2 bumpers, but they will have to be modded to fit in correctly at the ends.

And thats basically the car brought fully up to date now, comments as always welcome

The calipers are the same ones that are used on the st170

You have great mates.

Thanks very much guys

I love it to bits, although, there is something which is tempting me away from it! Got some serious thinking to do!

Well, I'm now definately sticking with the XR2 now, but I'm selling up my Weber Alpha TB's now, so buy them!

Well, the TB's are now all gone! Being replaced by something else

And I've just gotten myself a bias adjustable pedal box, it's a RallyDesign one for a Mk1 Escort, hydraulic clutch (needed for the new engine) and also has a Group 4 accelerator pedal

Something similar to this:
