Just need to get a extinguiser in the one side and some bits in the other as had the guys build it like that with the lower pockets/trays on the sides

I'd go for:

Sony CD head unit, something like the Sony CDX-GT929U. 52w x 4, MP3 & i-pod compatible, inbuilt equaliser. You can also change the colour of it to match your dash lights. Outputs for Amp & CD changer as well. http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/CDX-GT929U

Get some JBL speakers all round, either 2-way or component

and also dynamat the doors to reduce vibration and to aid better sound

Personally, I've alway's had Sony head unit's, I think head units are very similar really. What you're looking for is the functionality really.
If you're hooking up a head unit to an aftermarket amp, then its the amp supplying the power to the speakers, not the head unit.

I find JBL's offer the best value 'bang for your buck', they are reasonably priced and perform better than some more expensive speakers.

gotta agree, without spending £££s on speakers, JBL are pretty decent,

All depends on how much you want to spend.

£30-£50 gets you some 5 1/4" 2 ways or components, Ad £10 more and you can get 6 1/2" s

Currently got some GTO6508C's in the rear of the sapphire and gto-527's in the front ( i think )

Sony head units are pish IMO. Sony make great home entertainment but their car audio is pretty nasty stuff. I've had a few when I was younger, they always break after a few years, the sound quality and functionality just isn't as good as other units.

I love Pioneer units, second would be Alpine but I find them quite tricky to operate, buttons are small and hard to read and they are more difficult to set up, so would be Pioneer every time!

Early sonys yes i will have to agree but ive had one of those xm500 whole front is a display and folds down, its a great unit easy to use. I got my wife a dab sony for her focus which is a cracking unit for the money and tbh very similar to the jvc. also have a P88 pioneer again great unit but find the controls a bit too much.

Paul

Some of the modern Sony units are excellent.

I've had Sony/Alpine/Pioneer/Blaupunkt stuff over the year and early on sony wasn't as good as the others, but now, if you buy a Sony/Alpine/Pioneer with exactly the same specification and wattage output then all thats different IMHO is the colour of the screen, button layout and how you access functions.

just down to personal choice at end of day, if other people think that Sony head units are crap, then they are entitled to their opinion, fair enough

as I said earlier, if your hooking the headunit up to an aftermarket amp and upgraded speakers, then it just makes the headunit the volume and source control...

i had an older pioneer, cant remember the model number but it displayed dolphines! lol i did buy an alpine once but it blew up when i plugged it in currently i just have a sony meh bt2500 and although basic its been great for the last 4 years or so! bluetooth mic is a bit shite, i dont play many cd's these days i just use the jack with my mp3 player.

i do want to upgrade tho cos i fancy a small sub again!

i know most true car audio enthusiasts hate sony HU's but i like the look of them lol
