Unhappy 3dr 4wd head cam bearing destruction

Went for a drive in the 3dr today pulled up at a mates to find a pool of oil under the car, got it home and at a first glance looked like the cam cover gasket. But after removing this saw it was the cam seal, looks like it had been chewed up

After i removed the seal the bearings for the cam where also chewed up

Looks like the metal ring out of the cam seal has come out and chewed up the bearings, never seen that before
Just wondered if anyone else has or what caused it?

Looks to me like the bearing collapsed first...causing it to destroy the seal mate.

Your lucky some bits of the bearing could of fell into the timing belt and could of caused it to split/snap causing more damage.

Got the inlet cam out and cant see any damage, just waiting for the new bearings. Got new seals and spacers aswell also a new grA cambelt and tensioner, will change all the belts while im at it.

Was thinking about maybe upgrading the cams?

Never seen this before, too!
But ball bearings are wearing faster than slide bearings if I'm not wrong.
Maybe a fatigue?

Anyway you're very lucky. Could be much worse.
Good luck with the maintenance. It's not a common thing I guess.

Had me baffled for a while too, if i replace everything with new should be safe and sound again.

I never knew there was bearings on the cam on engines what so ever! I just thought is was much like the big ends where you just have two polished metal surfaces with pressured oil in between.

I was always told to make sure you could twist the belt 90degrees when it was tesioned up, and that was about right. Is this not the case?
