Default The Lakes Tour 2011 - What a Day! (Long Report)

Well what can I say, yet another awesome day out thanks to Oggie and all the organisers of The Lakes Tour 2011!

After thunderstorms overnight the day started out wet, but that didn't dampen any spirits, and by 9am the sun was beginning to make an appearance and we arrived at Heaves Hotel about 9:10am, greeted by some fantastic looking motors!

What a lovely view:

About 40 miles into the tour the Escort began to produce a rattling noise which sounded as though we had a Singer Sewing Machine under the bonnet. We knew immediately this wasn't a good sign so we pulled over and had a look under the bonnet - a spark plug had worked itself loose, so tightened up it was and away we went

Staying positive:

About 10 minutes later the car started getting very hot and we were back onto three cylinders. This time it was serious. Another unscheduled pit stop and a good investigation revealed that the tappets had worked themselves loose. The Lakes Tour had came to an abrupt halt.

The weather at this point summed up our feelings:

We were approximately 40 miles away from home, but we knew that the tour was bringing us to the Home of M-Sport which is just a 2 mile drive away from our house. So, we decided to limp the power-less Escort the long distance home. Gutted and wet.

BUT, all was not lost, oh no! With our Escort safely back on our drive it was time to bring out the Lethal Weapon. Sure it isn't RWD and STRICTLY speaking it shouldn't be allowed on The Lakes Tour, but hey, it is an Old Skool Ford, and a bloody nice one at that! We had only missed out 20 mile of the tour so decided to head straight to M-Sport with our new motor...

The Lethal Weapon:

After a good tour around the M-Sport facility, and a lot of laughs from the people who had seen and helped us with the Escort, who were now witnessing us in a Fiesta MK1, it was time for our free lunch at M-Sport

After lunch we set off back towards Heaves Hotel. I realised that my dad was gutted about his car giving up the go so decided to let him enjoy the last 60 miles of the tour behind the wheel of a MK1 Fiesta

The Auld Boy happy as Larry:

The scheduled stop at The Lakeland Motor Museum revealed that the Fiesta MK1 had an older brother!

Siblings:

And back to The Heaves Hotel it was for the buffet, beer, and goodbyes!

We have made it!

Regardless of the gutting breakdown, dad and I have had a brilliant day. The Fiesta held out which was a bonus and got us to the finish, and home!

DAMAGE REPORT - two rockers had worked loose and extensively damaged the rally cam!
