Default Black EK9 Civic Type R .....now with VIDEOS!!

Ok, was looking for something a little more special to drive than my Mondeo ST200 and had been looking at a lot of different options... ended up buying this Civic which I've known since my mate bought it as a totally standard fresh import in 2007 with 49k miles on it, its got 53k on it now and has gone from totally standard to its current level in the past few thousand miles. The stack of history for this car is amazing.

I know its not gonna float everyones boat on here, but there might be a few of you that are interested. Here are the pics anyway, might take a minute to load up:

Engine:

Spoon 1.8 Stroker Kit - 81.25
Spoon 2pc High Comp Head Gasket
Skunk2 High Comp Valves
Cylinder Head Ported , Polished And Gas Flowed
Skunk2 Stage II Cams
Skunk2 Titanium Valve Springs And Retainers
Skunk2 Adjust Cam Gears
Skunk2 70mm Tb
Skunk2 IM Machined To Match 70mm - Polished And Gas Flowed
Skunk2 Carbon Composite Fuel Rail
Walbro Fuel Pump
RC 440cc Injectors
AEM Cold Air Intake
Hytech custom 4-2-1 Manifold
Custom De-Cat
Spoon N1 and Spoon B-Pipe
Spoon Engine Mounts
Hondata S300 with Launch Control ...of course!

Transmission:

MFactory Straight Cut Gearkit
Quaife LSD
Exedy Clutch And Fidanza 7lbs Flywheel

Chassis:

Full Adjustable Tein Superstreet Coilovers
Stock 15" EK9 Wheels in Black/Red
Black RAYS Lightweight Wheel Nuts
Uprated bushes... not sure exactly what, have to check the folder of history!
Fast Road Geometry Setup

Interior:

Obviously Recaros, Electrics etc etc
Kenwood MP3 Player
Uprated Front Component Speakers
Uprated Rear 6x9 Speakers
AEM Wideband AFR Gauge
Water Temp Gauge
Exhaust Gas Temp Gauge
Oil Temp Gauge
Oil Pressure Gauge

Exterior:

Full Type R Bodykit
Modified Front Bumper to give cold air to AEM Intake
Seibon OEM Carbon Bonnet
Seibon OEM Carbon Boot
Stock 15" Alloys refurbed in Black/Red Lip

The standard power output for these is 185bhp @ Flywheel and with the above mods, my car is making 211bhp @ Wheels..

The cams in the car are pretty damn lumpy, which causes the engine to burble up and down on its own!! The gearbox is a bit of a bastard when crawling around at town speeds and does whine a bit because of the straight cut gears... but when you open it up, the car seriously shifts, its comedy how quick it bangs through the gears to be honest.

Cheers,
Grant

Andy, I think the gauges are from a groupbuy on one of the Honda Forums that my mate is on... I actually think they're called, Saga, or something along those lines. They have a peak warning function and have a start up/close down ceremony the same as my Defis did in my Impreza. These ones in the EK9 do the job fine for a fraction of the cost.

Stu, this car is something from Frankie Wongs wet dreams mate... his little moon shaped dish would light up if he saw the spec list for this car.

The cams are something I was kinda expecting having known the car well, before I bought it, but they do make you look a bit of a plank sitting in traffic through the town.. specially with a Spoon N1 amplifying everything to silly levels.. meeh, maah, meeh, maah <- sound of car revving up and down itself.

Thanks for the comments so far though, surprised there are so many people into these cars on a BMW forum... sorry, Ford forum.

Cheers,
Grant

Always loved these, really like that, properly done

Only thing I will say I been in the baby VTi and wasn't impressed in the slightest with its performance, however, never been in a type R version so power delivery may be different in your case. Just to stop me confusing myself, this is the B16 engine with a stroker or a B18? Is it essentially a B18 then if it is a B16 with a stroker?

The EK4 Civic VTi has a B16A2 which gives 156bhp
The EK9 Civic TypeR has a B16B which gives 185bhp

This car still has the B16B fitted, but with a lot of the original components replaced including the addition of the Spoon Stroker kit taking it to a 1.8 capacity.. its pretty far removed from a standard EK9 to be honest with you, and its a total different world away from a normal VTi.

Talking 1/4 mile-wise:

A standard EK4 VTi will do 15.5 to 16 second pass
A standard EK9 TypeR will do 14.5 to 15 second pass
My EK9 TypeR did a 13.0 @ Crail with the previous owner when it was pretty much road trimmed, fuelled up, road tyres etc... I'm pretty sure it would do 12s with some decent tyres, lightened and the correct weather.

Grant

Wow that certainly is a huge difference!! 13 sec quarter Jesus fuck that is fucking quick!!! The VTi I went in I reckon I could probably have it in the Focus that's why was less than impressed with it especially with the 150bhp power claim...felt nothing like 150bhp to me which is roughly what mine runs although with probably more torque than what that would've been producing.

But that is M3 worrying territory off the lights

Cheers for the comments, I'm a big fan of this wee car... its a savage thing to drive.

I'm thinking about changing a couple of wee bits here and there and maybe adding a few suspension bits and uprated brakes when they need it but that'll all happen over time.

Gonna try and get some videos taken, but the pics from the camera aren't great, so dunno how well the videos are gonna come out... and how well the sound of the car will be through the camera, but I'll update the title if I manage to do them.

Grant

The sound of these engines is amazing, I love them. Would be ace if you could get some. If it is 211 @ the wheels then should that be around 230-240 @ the fly?

Yea, I'm not sure what the exact transmission losses are in these cars... I'd guess at around 12.5% so I'd think it should be around the 235-240 ballpark at the flywheel.

Apparently because of the spec that Andy used on this car and the extremely high compression ratio, the 98/99RON pump fuel isn't actually the optimum for the car. When the Hondata was being set-up/mapped the guy said if the car was being mapped on race fuel then it should comfortably make a further 35-40bhp.

Cheers,
Grant

LOL, I'm not quite JDM enough to spunk the kind of wonga needed for Bride Recliners... to be honest, the Recaros fitted as standard are fine with me, the most I might do is swap them out for some Black Recaros/Door Cards to keep the slightly 'subtle' look a bit more. Dunno though, not totally set on that plan yet.

You're right that the EK9 was a Jap Import only model, so they're a bit more special/rare to see on our roads than other TypeR models..

Just uploading the videos to YouTube too, so keep your eyes peeled.

Grant

Ok, took the car out to make a couple of small videos.. never managed to get any launch footage since it was pretty cold and had been drizzling a wee bit earlier so wouldn't have been any point since it'd have shot to the limiter.

Click Here... for the launch control demo which is part of the Hondata S300 features.

Click Here... for the rolling start @ 30mph run through 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears. The gearkit I've got in the car has a long 1st gear, reaches c50mph, then its quick through 2, 3 and 4 with a slightly longer 5th.
