Yeah the lights are a common issue as i'm sure you know by now, you can actually fix them but it's a bit of a faff taking them apart.
I just replaced my vanos solinoid o'rings, it runs much better now and doesn't rattle as much on startup, in fact most of the time it doen't make a noise at all depending on the temperature. Didn't even realise they were that bad until I undid the covers and pressurised oil was inside the dust cover casing where the board was, prooves the seals were fooked, I also found a broken wire on one of the boards so I fixed that as well.
Just bought the parts to fix the steering as it's really vague, going to replace the centre tie rod, both track rod ends, and the idler arm bush as well as the top mounts so I should notice a massive imporvment as I hate how sloppy the steering has become.
You're 100% right though on every point, there's nothing on the market that will touch it for the money. Let me know how you get on with the bulbs, I upgraded mine a couple of years ago but they weren't anything that fancy, still better than the awful standard ones though
Wow just editing this to say how good that pic is!!!!! Love it!

E60 or E39? Depends how much miles you do I suppose!
Simon now has me considering an E60 since my work circumstances have changed, I'm basically only in the UK for 1 week out of the month and don't have to commute when I am at home now, so I've probably done about 600 miles in the last 6 months in the M5, I could almost justify an E60 now.... But i've never really lusted after them like I did the E39

Fuel costs don't really bother me to be honest as I drive a company van for work everyday so don't do a huge annual mileage.
Just paranoid about shit going wrong if I get one!! Lol!!

I'd like an E39 mate. I'd love one in Estoril blue but they seem about as rare as rocking horse shit and seem to go up for stupendous money when they do crop up!!

Can you use the van for personal use as well (above board) ? They don't go wrong, very reliable in pretty much every aspect, and if it's a 2nd car then all the more reason not to worry. Parts aren't that cheap, and personally i find only BMW parts are half decent to use, that is the only downside. I just got a rangey and the parts for that seem cheap in comparison

I paid bang on Ł9k for my E39 M5 facelift in the summer of 2009 with 103k on it. Sold it 6 weeks ago for Ł8k without even advertising it with 117k on it. It was pretty flawless though with no rust anywhere unlike most & i mean NO rust. The E60 M5 has only covered 52k & only do about 2k a year & is under BMW warranty so hopefully should be painless except for depreciation.
Great picture of your E39 M5 btw Stu,they look so good from the rear !

I'd love an E60 M5, but I'd be shitting my pants that something was about to break... Buying one with a warranty seems the way forward. I think the panic would be worth it, for that V10 howl!
Stu, that is a stunningly well taken photo. To quote Magnus Walker, 'Dirt don't slow you down'

Had the E60 M5 for coming upto 2 years next month and it's been faultless so far, no issues whatsoever and deffo no desire to go back to a Cosworth. Just love the V10 sound and the savage way the SMG bangs in when on a charge.
Got invited to Brands Hatch for the day courtesy of the BMW dealer I use, free track day open pit all day. Very suprised at how a big heavy beast like this was so much fun on track.
Anyone thinking of buying one do it !

E39 M5 is probably the best car BMW ever made imo, yes there was the M1 and E30 M3 but nothing does every day practicality and comfort like the E39....ride quality goes down hill from there on. My friend had one and used to come to track days with front wheels on the back, worn tyres and Alcon stoppers, that went very sideways.
