Not bad car looks good

i know the some of the drivers in that video (the silver escort cos which passes you towards the end of part one and the black and white rk tuning skyline which passes you towards the start of part 2)

and it was probably a good job you let the guy with the skyline past as after the 16 years he has been driving at the track he's built a reputatuion of been a little mad towards other drivers on track who dont let him past

Gav it's a bit more nose heavy, it's always going to be... but the chassis is unchanged since it was a 16v, so room for improvement

he hasnt had that very long.. i think he's just trying a little to hard most of the time like the time he was black flagged with my dad when they decided to race on the track instead of just driving fast.. but i know he has been trying to keep it sideways on some of the corners recently

he really should go back to cosworths though

R888s are 195/50x15 on 7x15 wheels - Guess you need the 16"s for the Brembos, pain in the ass eh!

Edition 30 is the other half's car, she had it new in 08 , nice car with Revo remap 280ish bhp.

Default [ does a middle finger salute @ the slammed police ]

I bought these VR6 Coil overs , they are a bit tatty, but aren't Bilstein as advertised, as I found out that.....

***H&R *** use Bilstein inverted monotube dampers....

http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.ph...hlight=bilstein

Once upon a time they looked like this....

New set is Ł971 at the moment!!

Category :

H&R Coilovers
Sub-category :

H+R Coil-Overs - VW
Application :

Corrado Models with Plus susp.
Product Code:

H-29865-5
Details :

Lowers by 30-70mm/30-60mm. See notes 13, 17
Price:

Ł971.23 inc VAT
Delivery: Ł13.50
Not very often I get a proper bargain - but this time I bloody did!

Fitted them night before last, in the dark .

Far too low = front arch - tyre scrubbage.

Raised it 15mm on the threads (95mm of thread) @ the front and dropped it down at the back (50mm of thread) to give a level stance.

Needs the geo setting up and once I've moved the battery going to get it corner-weighted. [ChrisP might need your mate Jtech's details?]

Even though the Bilstein dampers are not adjustable it gives a firm but well damped ride, isn't crashy at all.

Springs are 180-70 front 300-50 rear

The way H&R lists springs is "length-rate"

The 180-070 in the front is the length of the spring in milimeters, 180 and the rate 070. The 300-050 for the rear is the spring length in millimetres, 300, and the rate 050.

The rates are listed in newtons/mm of travel and can be converted to lbs/inch as follows, 1 newton / millimeter = 5.71014715 pounds force / inch.

So 70N/mm = 399.7 lbf/in
and 50N/mm = 285.5 lbf/in

More pics

Fitted gen VW new header tank as my old one was no longer transparent so meant taking the cap off to check the level..

Yes. I could go lower with the rear ride-height, but have to consider arch clearance as I have increased the rear track 20mm each side. Also not tried my 888s on there yet, as they have squarer sidewalls may have probs with tyre>arch scrubbage. B)

As finding a job @ VW main dealer has given me more enthusiasm about doing stuff than in the previous 4 months, I've got a few bits in mind that need doing to the car.

Suspension set up properly - I can do 4 wheel alignment on the proper VAG machine at work, but am interested to get it set up by a specialist, inc. corner weighting depending on cost.

Relocate battery, I have been doing this for ages, got most of the bits, just need to crack on with it.

Quick release front bumper - it's quick release at the moment, held on with cable ties, but going to fit some bonnet pins either side of front number plate and 'lighten' the bumper irons..

PAS rack leaking - need to get that sorted, it's leaving oil on the drive :nono:

Track tyres/wheels - Either another set of R888s or Hankook RS-2 [cheaper] - red pinstripe around rim edge of black wheels B) Inspired by this pic.

Brakes - Brake pipes inside car F-R , bias valve and new rigid pipes throughout.
New front discs [got those] New rear discs [need to buy] and pads to suit.

That should keep me busy for a bit.

mk4 R32 Golf - You need a gear selector tower out of a 02J box where the cables fit onto to match.

Either ball or pin fitting.

Finally got around to re-locating the battery on the mk2.

Funny lunch box. Łfree [yes yes,I know the harnesses aren't ideal]

Earth lead is from a 2001> Ford Transit - when the dual-mass flywheel falls apart, which is a regular occurence on those, the swarf jams the starter motor and blows the fusible link (the earth lead)
I had one in the shed, which I just cut out the fusible link part and bolted the cable to the earthing point. Łfree

Used an old Beetle battery clamp, donated by my neighbour but the battery could still tip up, so made up a right angle bracket to secure it, it's rubber backed but as it's bolted to plastic, it's never going to short to ground anyway.
BMW E36 M3 battery cable, think Trackm3 from Northloop sent me this last year sometime - thanks Martin!

I'm still using a normal 063 battery, would be better with one of those sealed racing batteries to save weight I guess. I need to find a vent pipe for it too.

To say the rear discs on the Golf were well overdue to be changed, would perhaps be a slight understatement.

I bought a set of standard discs from my local motor factors and some Ferodo pads at the weekend with the view of doing the job Monday.

Set about the nearside first, no problems with the usual crappy 8mm allen key carrier bolts. Happy days.

Went to wind the caliper in and it went so far then no further with 'normal' hand pressure - got out a Draper wind back tool that uses a 24mm hex, with a 1/2" ratchet on, still wouldn't budge, tried
pushing pedal to square up the piston, again , went so far then no further - of course I think it's new caliper time but it's Easter Monday and everywhere shut.

Took the caliper off and in the vice gave it some welly and manged to retract the caliper - but used far too much force than is usually required...

Needed to swap over wheel studs into the new discs so double-nutted the old ones out and used Loctite 271 stud lock to secure them .

Yep, you guessed it, when I built it all up and bled the NSR caliper it was fooked, and wouldn't work, piston worked with the foot brake but wouldn't 'pump up' to the pads so had loads of free play before doing anything - hand brake wouldn't ratchet up either - new caliper needed.

Had a look on-line and GSF were Ł67.50 + VAT for a late mk3 caliper - EuroCarParts similar price, checked with the local Bromsgrove motor factors this morning and they had one on the shelf for Ł57.19 + VAT.

Fetched that this morning and have working brakes once again. First time in 7 years owning the car I've needed to replace a rear caliper, good going for a Golf!

Started on my bias valve install tonight , invested in a Rivnut kit and used M6 Cap headed stainless bolts to secure the Wilwood bias valve, as it's a Yank spec thing, ideally it should be fitted on the driver's side of the tunnel.
As I'm fitting it in UK car, it has to go on pax side of tunnel so 'wilwood' logo and in/out markings can't be seen - no great shakes..

Got to make up and fit brake pipes for the whole car when I get some free time..... One pipe from MC to each front brake then a sinlge line F- R T'eed off to each rear flexi.

Then hope it doesn't suffer any locking rear brake issues....
