Default Escort Mk4 HCS Exhaust Issue

Hi all. Sorry this is a bit of a read.
A while ago now I yanked the engine from my old rotten Eclipse and chucked it in an even older mk4 estate.
At the time I mated the estate exhaust to the HCS downpipe. The estate being CVH had a slightly different bell joint/flange so the two never married well.

Right, back to today, I've just fitted a brand new exhaust (ordered for a HCS model escort NOT a CVH so as to fit my HCS downpipe).
The problem is, the sprung bolts they supplied do not fit.
Firstly, the bolts have a long collar that the spring sits over but did not come with a nut, I can only assume they're meant to bolt directly into the downpipe flange.
Heres the problem.
My (original HCS remember) downpipe flange is NOT threaded.
The collars on the new bolts are massively too long - they pass through the exhaust flange well enough but dont allow the bolts to be tightened enough to put any tension on the springs to hold the exhaust.
Before you ask.. The original sprung bolts that came with the Eclipse were disguarded by some thick twat when he changed engines.

Someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong. I've double-checked the parts sent and they are deinately the right ones - according to suppliers.
For the moment I've used non-sprung bolts but because these permit no movement I can see either my manifold or downpipe cracking sooner or later.
Photos of the joint on a good 1.3 would be a world of help too.

And before you laugh and say 'Zetec it you fag' - I've already said it.

WHat? Nobody's changed an exhaust on an OHV mk4? Or is it just no-one who has can be arsed to look in the 'other cars' section.

Sod it, Mr Grinder will step in and make things right again. (Collar choppage methinks)

I bodged similar in my earlier years with new bolts, and made a couple of collars for the bolts out of a cut down and drilled through broom handle(which I got a slap and bill for!!), then obviously springs around the collars with bolts through, just a bit of measurement needed that's all, and in 3 years the collars still lasted well, thought they might disintergrate with the heat but they didn't.
