Any motorcycle mechanics on here

As above any one on here a bike tech

sridgett 17-05-2014 04:10 PM

Whats the prob then matey???

cossie891 17-05-2014 04:20 PM

I just bought a 2000 yz80 just had a engine build but can't get it to start so looking for the timing marks

sridgett 17-05-2014 04:36 PM

You need to find top dead center (T.D.C) To do this you need to have the spark plug out and put a screwdriver throw the plug hole.
Remouve the flywheel cover, and spin flywheel till the piston comes up to the top, and rock the flywheel to make sure the piston is at the top, if there is no marks on the flywheel that you can see then spin the flywheel intill the piston comes back up to the top, you shoud have marks on the 1st go or 2end go. you shoud have an arrow pointine to a mark on the crankcase

I hop this might help.

Is the plug getting wet and is it sparking and also make sure its got the right grade plug this is important and don't use a iridium plug just a normal NGK will do the job
...

Then as SRIDGETT said you need to find TDC then check out the timing points on the stator bracket .... pics would be good when u have found TDC

cossie891 17-05-2014 09:38 PM

Hi guys I can't find any timing marks on it just need a pic to check with what I got yes it sparks and the plug is wet it's had also got the correct plug in it

cossie891 17-05-2014 09:40 PM

Will check what sridgett has posted in the morning

Turbosystems 17-05-2014 09:42 PM

have you tried fitting a new spark plug 2 strokes can eat plugs

gingerturbo 17-05-2014 09:50 PM

If its a single cylinder 2 stoke you don't need any timing marks, make sure its sparking and that the magneto is working too

cossie891 17-05-2014 09:50 PM

It's a brand new plug the engine has just been rebuilt at a motorcross shop but they can't look at it now for a few weeks

gingerturbo 17-05-2014 09:52 PM

If its just bin rebuilt, wipp out the plug and listen as you turn it over if you hear that its got compression, also make sure the earths are touching clean metal

Turbosystems 17-05-2014 09:56 PM

I'd still try another new plug

gingerturbo 17-05-2014 09:58 PM

Yep I agree also heat the plug up before you fit it

cossie891 17-05-2014 10:05 PM

It's got good compression and sparks it defo has timing marks somewhere but I can't find it as if the stator plate is in the wrong place it will spark when it ain't meant to

cossie891 17-05-2014 10:06 PM

I did heat the plug as well it back fires every now and then

cossie891 17-05-2014 10:06 PM

I also have tried another plug with no joy

Turbosystems 17-05-2014 10:09 PM

was it a new plug

cossie891 17-05-2014 10:24 PM

No a used plug

cossie891 17-05-2014 10:24 PM

I will go get another new one 2moro

Post a photo of the stator plate.

What's been done to the Carb, has it been cleaned?
How old is the fuel?

ajamesc 18-05-2014 07:46 AM

I was just in the same situation with a husky 610 left kick I even sent the hole ignition system off from the generator to the plug to be bolted on to a test bike!
Problem with mine turned out to be the carb and after re building it with new O rings and seals and getting the idle / mixture right. It now starts spot on

s1cosse 18-05-2014 09:20 AM

Cheack the reads mate common on two storks they break up and it will never start.

cossie891 18-05-2014 10:13 AM

Cleaned the carb out it has fresh fuel the reeds are sweet I just had a cough been on it all morning will get pics now

cossie891 18-05-2014 11:29 AM

These are the marks I can find but don't know what is what

Turbosystems 18-05-2014 12:04 PM

did the engine builder only have a chisel and a lump hammer in his tool collection

cossie891 18-05-2014 12:24 PM

Know the builder built the top end and bottom end the guy I bought the bike from fitted the flywheel and stator plate but stripped the threads on the fly wheel so can't get it off

Should the line on the flywheel line up with the stator plate

cossie891 18-05-2014 08:40 PM

All sorted now so many little things I had to do but it now runs just need to set the idle and mixture will get someone that knows what they are doing to sort it

cossie891 22-05-2014 12:01 PM

Guys just one more problem it's running back wards I do to know where the timing marks are meant to be but I do know that moving the stator platrand starting it again is not solving it

sridgett 22-05-2014 04:17 PM

What you mean the bike drives back???

cossie891 22-05-2014 04:20 PM

Yes mate it's running backwards as in if I put it in gear it will reverse lol

cossie891 22-05-2014 04:23 PM

I have retarded the ign as far as it will go as well just found out it has a longer piston as it was bored to 100cc it has 3 base gaskets on it if I take them off and go with one the piston will hit the head

sridgett 22-05-2014 04:24 PM

LOL 6 speed's in reverse. That's funny you said that mate as i was at a mates house chating about bikes and he had a mate who had the same prob. what you got to do is rotate the timing 180 degrees.

cossie891 22-05-2014 04:30 PM

It defo was a surprise. I can't move the timing on it mate

sridgett 22-05-2014 04:53 PM

y not mate???

cossie891 22-05-2014 04:57 PM

Because the way the loom is mate it won't rotate 180

sridgett 22-05-2014 05:01 PM

AAh can you not move the loom and then rotate?

cossie891 22-05-2014 05:03 PM

No mate what if I took the windings of the stator plate and switched them around would that work

sridgett 22-05-2014 05:12 PM

Not sure mate try it and see if not what you need to do then mate is take the timing system off and rotate the engine 180

ajamesc 22-05-2014 05:15 PM

Before you do anything I won't to see a vid of you flat out backwards in top gear lol
