I brought a 2001 r1 about 1yr ago and the only problem I have had is the regulator so just make sure the lights get brighter when you rev it I got told it's a common fault on them. If you buy this months superbike mag it's got loads of info about the r1 in but you need to get it before the 10th cause that's when the new one is out.

i have a late registered 2002 5jj carb'd model, awesome bike
only probs i've had was the fuel pump splitting.
bought mine in 2005 with 11k on it. now on 17k, veryrarely get out on it but when i do it gets cained hard.

started life blue before the full repaint yellow and currently stripped down awaiting new paintwork in rossi's new colours.

save some more money and buy an 04-06 model much much better bike in every way. Brakes are a lot better, handles a lot better, noticably faster and just as comfy, only down side is that you get a lot less under seat storage casue of the ubnder seat exhausts.

i ride a 03 model ,theres more torque on this model than the 04 onwards model, had no problems at all with mine bought it new,its got 23k on it now,you get alot of people worry about high mileage on bikes, but its not high mileage that kills an engine,it poor maintainance, make sure its got a good service history.

i'm sure the extra 20bhp more than makes up for the lack of torque, the only difference i noticed between the 5pw and the 5vy model was how slow and out dated it felt in comparison but each to there own i suppose
