Default Noob wants a go :)

I want to get into modifying models, but have no idea where to start.
How much, and where do I get, the stuff I need? I've seen some cracking models out there and I'm eager to get involved.

Thanks

i get all my models from ebay and that's best place to get parts too, they are becoming more popular as parts were impossible to get a little while bk

Nice one, must have a look

How difficult are they to modify? I mean, are they flimsy like I imagine or are they rigid? Sorry for all the questions just dont want o waste money

It all depends on what you want to do and what brand as some are easier than others.

For your 1st one, perhaps try a cheap model and just a simple re-spray. Theres a thread on here somewhere with our 1st tries.

getting the old wheels off can be a bit fiddly trying not to break anything but when putting new wheels on they normally have to be glued on so wont rotate or sometimes even steer anymore but they are display models not toys

Sometimes you can just swap them over simply. Most of the time, you need to file down and glue the wheels on.

EsCos wheels onto a SunStar Escort, they need to be glued on.

Jada 1/24 wheels onto a 1/18 Transit, they just go straight on and still turn (well mine do anyway.

Like trying to pull them off when they are actually screwed on

What kind of stuff are you searching for to get the best models?

Seems like a silly question but I'd like to look in the right area

eBay lol, the companies that make the models don't do parts it's only a hand full of people who make these parts by building a kit or wheel then copying it

Ive done a few 1/24 & matchbox cars (1/64 ish) but 1/18 is the most popular.

Thanks for all of your help, appreciated.

I've dug out an old VW Campervan model, only a little thing, to practice a respray on. My reason for this is, if I cock it up, it doesn't matter.
Will normal spray paint from Halfords do nicely or should I get it from a model shop? Which one would be cheaper? And, might sound stupid, but which, if any, primer do I use. I have never done this before.

Wish me luck lol

Halfords or Hycote paint for me. I use grey primer on all of mine, but some colours turn out better with white or red.
