Colin - youll find it easier if you just used some nitromors on that mate - its about Ł6 a tin from B&Q, just dab it on with a household paintbrush and wait 15-20mins, then the paint rinses off.
then just give it a decent coat of primer inside & out before you put colour on
if your respraying a car, you only need to strip all the paint if its in really bad condition, otherwise just flat it all off with some 800/1200 and a scotch pad to take the factory lacquer off

I used grey primer so its not as bright as it should be. Next time i'll do a layer of white paint over the primer first.

The plan is to do a dub smoothed Mini in every scale. Done 1/18 & 1/24 so far. Just 1/32, 1/43 & 1/64 to do.
