Default Anyone modified a steering column before?

I Stuck the drivers seat in my mini track car yesterday and realised the standard steering wheel position is like driving a bus
most people just fit extensions to the original bracketry to drop the wheel height and bring it to a more normal angle but the wheel is then on your knees.
so it got me thinking, how easy is it to modify?
basically i want to do this:

but the main problem is the angle i would need the top UJ to bend.
Any ideas?

it could be done, but you have to be carefull of the angle of the UJ, about 70 degrees from flat is your absolute limit, otherwise it will lock, ideally you dont want to go much more than 45 degs otherwise you will start to loose feel

hmmmm.... just as i thought.
i cant think of any other way to do it really other than UJ's?
anyone know of anyone to sells various sized Universal joints or is it gonna be best to rummage round the scrapyards?
think im gonna have a go and see what angles i can get away with.

seat is as far back as it can go, the rollcage gets in the way if i try to go any further, plus the pedals are perfect.

You need a 90 degree gearbox for the steering column .
Nissan used this in the later Super tourers but i have no idea where you'd get one unless you trawl the internet .

Visble on the inner wing left of picture .
