Default Snapped bolt head dilema.. removal?????

The missus Saab has a snapped bolt in the gearbox (the bolt for one of the mounts)

How do I get this out?

Iall i can think of is drilling a hole in the bolt and using an easy out... thing is.. i dont want to risk this snapping.. then im fucked as i wont be able to drill the bolt/easy out .. out

would it be better to drill out the bolt? if so... what do i need to insert to re thread it? helicoil wont be strong enough will it?

cheers

easy out, then if you snap it (you shouldnt if its a snap on one!) get a grinder, grind around the snapped bit and go again!

Helicoil will be fine providing its fitted correctly, we use them on some jet engines as they provide a replaceable thread within components that cost hundreds of thousands.

The only problem will be drilling it out perfectly in line as the helicoil will need to be spot on in the center.

Is there nothing you can grip on to try and tempt it out ??

Dave,

Drill it straight and true....dot punch it before you start then get another person to line it for you as you drill.....use an air drill !! they have a better feel, find out the recommended tapping drill size and try to drill it out to that in stages...if its straight you'll find the old thread will collapse as you get close if that works and you can get the old bolt out stick a tap down it if not helicoil will be fine.....we use helicoils where we have steel bolts into ally in all applications....less likely to seize dissimilar metals and all that...

HTH

I've been lucky last two times I had this on head bolts...

one a little bit was sticking out so couple of nuts on it to lock it off and it came out, and on another the way it sheared meant that it was possible to get a screw driver in to fire it round as there is no tension in it.

another option is to weld something too it.

Is this the reverse thread tool, which kinda self taps then obviously just starts to undo the original bolt. Seen these used quite successfully a few times

there are quite a few bits and bobs on the market now for removing the bolt. i guess it would be better to do that and replace it that to drill and helicoil it.

got any pics of it? how much of the bolt is raised that you could grip it with?
maybe even just a pair of mole grips with sort u out
