Posted the other day(with not much help!) saying that the fuel gauge on my escort gti was playing up, it went to empty even though the tank was quater full and then shot up to a quater, then back to empty agian. The last 2 days its been reading empty aswell so today i went and put £35's worth of fuel in and the gauge went up to full when i turned the ignition on, so all seems fine now.

Had the car over a year and this is the first time its played up but what caused it to play up, was it just the float got stuck or something and when i filled up it got un-stuck? Thats all i can think of anyway

 

It sounds like the sender is fooked mate.

There is a variable resistor in there, and as the wiper (attached to the float) is touching different places, it's not connecting properly.

Worth checking all wiring for a loose connection though, but I doubt it.

 

What if its fine from now on?
ive drove it about 10miles after i filled it up and the gauge hasnt moved at all since then.
