it wasnt called a mk1,it was plainly called escort,of which further models were developed thus getting taged as MK 1,2,3,4,5 etc etc.

just like the focus, the old one is now referred as the mk1, and the new one, the mk2... whereas before the mk2, there was just a focus!

As far as I know ford called the Mk2 Escort the 'Mk2' when it was released as a way of discerning the new model from the old one and hence improving its appeal.

Then the original escort was retrospectively called the Mk1.

Or so my old A level business studies teacher told me! lol

However I could be talking complete ARSE!

the 100e range started in 1953 with the
prefect
anglia
popular
escort
squire
and finished in 1960

this escort belongs to a mate of mine and is very rare
and we are trying to trace the history of the ecsort name so the so called MK1 is not the mk1 to me that is Logic is it not

well it evidently isn't so daft is it..??
I wasn't aware of an Escort model prior to the "MK1", but there clearly was (Escort 100E - estate version of 100E Popular saloon it appears?) so yeah, logically it implies that the 100E Escort should be MK1....

it's the same with all cars
until they are superceded by a facelifted model, they will never be known as the "MK 1" until there is a "MK 2"
look at the granda's, they still call the first of the smoth shaped ones the scorpio rather than a mk3 and so on and so forth when they wer'nt all scorpios
then you had the scorpio come along and they called them the frogeyed ones

it doesn't make sense but we all have to live with it

Like the Consul Capri was the first Ford with the Capri name, but isn't the mk1.

Didn't know there was an Escort before the 'mk1' but if there was that make the mk1 a mk2 and so forth - but even though there is now known to be an Escort before the mk1, the mk1 is still called and will always be called the mk1 whether it technically is or not,, confused?! lol

The Escort NOW known as Mk 1 was not called Mk1 until the MK11 came out, I was there at the time it came out.

No manufacturer calls the first car, in what later becomes a series of cars, Mk1 because they don't know that there will be a Mk11.

Its only part way throught the production years of the first one, that they realise they have a good name , that they then decide on the next revision and call it Mk 11.

As someone has said Focus was Focus until the revised model was planned and became the Mk11 Focus, then the facelift Mk1 Focus became Mk1.5

The first VW Golf was not called Mk1, The first Granada was not called Mk1, The first Mondeo was not called Mk1, Until the second in what became a series was produced.

Is someone going to lock this thread now.................

The Escort part of the 100E - is that not like a special edition name, like the Escort Harrier, Mondeo Mistral, or the Granada Sapphire (a 2 tone Mk2 model), rather than the proper model name?

What I'm trying to say is that if the "Escort" part shows a trim level, I can see that you would ask for, say, a drivers seat for a 100E Escort, but if you need something mechanical, that would fit all the 100Es with that engine/box, you would ask for one for a 100E.

Or have I missed the point too.

Just in case I have missed the point, why do BMW call their 3 series E36/E46 etc?

Who recognises which one it is from the code?

Who cares?
