battery light issue UPDATE SORTED
right about 2 weeks ago on this escort gti were working on the battery light kept coming on and off then stayed on for 2 days and the car died cut out dead so had alternator reconned and recharged battery built it all back up starts 1st turn of the key but battery lights staying on permanent any ideas
so you think the alternators fuct i just got it back today from being reconned as thats what i would say it was the alternator seems to be whinning alot aswell do you reckon they fucked the job up
brake fluid?
If its whining make sure the belt is tight enough.
The battery light comes on when there is no live feed (or at least below a certain amount) from the blue wire (I think) off the alternator. No live feed - no charge. So it really can only be the alternator or its associated wiring at fault.

i had the same problem once on a sierra i had changed the alternator, battery etc and the battery light was still on
i then called out an auto electrician out and he suggested i take the cowling off from around the steering wheel and where the wiring runs down from the ignition it goes down to a connector plug which sometimes can have a crap connection over time.
he then told me to cut the wires off from both sides of the plug and reconect them using a new connection box and it worked a treat.
I dont know if its the same on the escort and i wouldnt cut the wires before having someone who knows look at it but it might be worth taking the cowling off and see if the wires run down to a connection plug and give them a wiggle see if it makes a difference hope this helps

I've had this problem before a few times,
both times it was the Earthing cable to earth the engine to the body of the car either not very well connected/rusting or actually broken.

cheers to everyone that tryed to help us out
we took the car there this morning and the guy listened to it and agreed the alternator was fooked so i took it home removed it off the car and took it back he put it on his machine and it worked mint
so he rang his auto electrics mate and he said he thinks its the fuse box so luckily i had a spare 1 here so strip down and rebuild light had gone out
so i went down the street and the light was back
so after ages of pissing about we finaly found it was the blue wire but was so hard to find and weve had to strip loads of shit off just to be able to see it
the lad had the clutch done recently so we reckon they must have trapped the fooker heres a pic
