My science teacher said the best colour to paint all the radiators in your house would be black, but people pick white obviously cos it looks better

BUT, I always thought black aborbs heat where as white reflects heat But which colour would allow the most heat to be taken away by the air passing is anyones guess i'd probably say plain alloy so the paint or whatever doesn't act like a heat jacket

I'd preper black though cos it would look better, and aren't the RS500 coolers black? it's too hard

theres a difference,

a Intercooler wants to absorb cold, from passing by air,

a House rad wants to release heat to passing air.

it makes fook all differance as the heat inside your intercooler will always be hotter than ambiant, and its also force-cooled , if you wanted to 'warm up your cooler then you owuld paint it black as black absorbs heat (aslong as the ambiant is hotter than the cooler ) if you wanted to remain a cool internal temp from higher ambiants then you would have a silver or bright colour to reflect the ambiant (being higher than the internal temp) which all of the above never is or we wouldnt be running intercoolers !

- i thank you

because thats what colour behr made the originals - have a general look say take 100 cars of varying makes and models - you will find its a 50/50 mix of black/silver finishes

e.g manufacturers use subcontractors to make there parts so whats availabe gets used ! - bu also do you think the likes of radtec/pace/pro-alloy would all be in business if all the parts had to be black ? and they had been producing silver finished products - it makes fook all differance

if black conducts heat would it not be better for the intercooler to be black as moving at speed thro the air would cool the forced air quicker ?

do you honoustly think that the colour of your intercooler is really going to matter at windspeeds of 100mph+ - it really wont matter

heat exchangers on production cars are painted as the car manufacturer wants them to last more than 5 mins after the roads have been salted

whether they are painted silver or black is largely down to manufacturer preference, i.e a silver one is easily visible through the front grille, but a black one is hidden.

if anyone (e.g. proalloy or whoever, or a magazine) wants to do a proper scientific test, the test facility that i work on could be used. 250 bhp rolling road in a temperature and humidity controlled test cell with full vehicle frontal area windspeed up to 70mph.
