Having a shell shot blasted.Pro's and cons..WHERE FROM?
Im going to buy a 3dr ex grpA shell on Sunday ( 1 in forsale section )
Basically the owner has describred it as being a shed
So as its cheap enough, I want to have the whole thing shot blasted and start from there. As this would save hours of sanding etc.
Question: is there any down falls in having this done??
And does anybody know of any companies in the Birmingham area that does this?? and the costs involved?
Look forward to your views.
thanx

Be VERY careful,
The mk2 shown in my sig looked lovely when in one piece but I chose to rip it to bits and get it blasted before I converted it.
Turned out it had more rot than the titanic, I'm still hunting for another shell although may possibly consider just fixing this one as not many old shells are perfect.

Try Central blast cleaning in Banbury
Pro's : The shell will be back to bare metal which means easier to repair/paint
Con's : Its shows where its got to be repaired, It can warp panels, It can be costly, Its a shitty job if you do it yourself, It wont remove rust all together but it takes away the vast majority of it

Have heard a glass bead would be needed for this type of thing. Dont mind any rust being exposed as this is one of the points in having it done, although the shell is not at all rotten, just very tatty.
Also would I not need for it to be sprayed with a protective primer of some sort, would the company doing the blasting offer this in there service, as the last thing I want is to be cleaning all that bead from the shell.
HAS to be in Birmingham.

Gaz do you have any experiance's with this? would'nt this make the shell become rotten in places due to chemicals echting into the metal?

I had a very long chat to the owners of the company at the classic car show at the nec , and the process sounds great , they will also put the car in a coat of primer for you
give em a ring they will be tell you all about the process
they are based in dudley , so nice and local for you too

Central Blast Cleaning only use blasting for areas like under the bonnet under neath/inside etc. Places like the roof, wings and what not are stripped by hand to stop the metal being damaged. I got a quote off them before and it was just over a grand for blasting/zinc priming. Not sure if that was the cost with hand stripping the major panels but i know they dont like to blast them. If you're looking for them to strip, repair/replace quite a few panels and repaint it (their paint jobs are top notch) You're looking around the 4-5 grand mark i think. But you are getting what is basically a brand new shell at the end of it.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, I got a quote from a local shot blasting place and they said like 200 quid with priming. But I then spoke to my painter and he said it was only worth doing on the underside etc as it can make it alot harder to paint. I think with CBS you're paying for their time and skill more than anything. They do alot of stuff with mark 1 escorts and their results are spot on. If you wanted you could probably get it blasted in all the non important areas pretty cheaply and then strip the rest by hand. Best thing to do is look up shot blasters in the yellow pages and see what they quote. I found peoples prices vary greatly. I could get you the number of the place near me that quoted 200 but its near Norwich so is miles away from you.

will have to work out cost, but ideally I would like for the whole thing to be blasted as its been 10 different colours in its life. Just imagine the horror under each layer of paint
Thanx guys, keep it coming

I've got use of a sandblasting machine to do some work to my nova.
I'm going to do the underside of the car and the inside of the floorpan where there is a small about of rot.
What sort of media should I use ? any ideas where to get some from in the Cambs area ?
I also want to do the inside of the arches so I'm praying for a stronger shell than the escort was

Sand blasting will remove the paint and rust and metal too.
I'd recommend high pressure (2000-3000bar) water blasting. It will remove paint and dirt but won't hurt the metal.

Plastic bead blasting is the best option and the one used on classic cars - it does not damage the panels but gets the shell back to bare metal.
if you buy a copy of classic car etc the comapanies advertise in the back pages
I dont like the sound of chemical stripping as unless the shells are immersed fully afterwards in some kind of cavity wax how can the cavities be properly protected from rusting afterwards

Bad News IMO, I know this was discussed a while back and my other concern was the fact acid dipping is usually ysed to remove weight from a body shell, though aparentlty the acid used isnt harsh enough..
If you want it blasted, just get the groves corners seams edges sill etc done, not the panels, there will be hours and hours of filler work to do if the cossie shell has had 10 layers of paint...

I like the sound of the dipping rather than blasting! As said, blasting can remove metal too...

plastic bead blasting does not remove metal and does not put a profile to the sheetmetal either like normal shot blasting -at the end of the day acid eats metal as well as everything else it comes into contact with.
As everyone has said its probably a good way to lighten a shell for rallying or racing but cannot see how its long term effects would help a resto project
The guy who restored the e type on the Discovery channel had his shell done with plastic bead - took it back to bright metal and exposed all the corroded steel so that it could be cut out and replaced - shell came back from the blaster like new apart from the rot with no panel damage at all

I see what you mean about the car being dipped, but is this not a cleaner process as they are willing to put a protective primer back onto the metal once stripped, hence no corrosion issues for the future????
Also if they do this I cant see the acid having long enough to work into the metal, as its cleaned away before its ready for primer, so I gather anyway.

I'm sure there was a place out Stafford way that did it?
