Steve.. hows your knowledge on 200sx's? you have one yeah?
A doris I know has one and has the following faults.. I wondered seeing as your a bit of a guru on these, you could give me pointers on what to look for / sort for her
Taps loudly when rev'd
apparently missfires sometimes (has new plugs)
down on power - sluggish
also needs a new front passenger wing... easy repair?
or generally any issues these cars have that i can double check for her
cheers
Dave

S13? 14? 14a? 15? Import or UK car?
Sooo many variations on engines its hard to know till i know more mate.
Taps loudly? If 14/14a/15 it could be the variable cam timing is fucked if 100% from top end. Replace or remove.
Or tappets.
Or if you mistakern and its actually ther bottomend then its big ends, esp if a 13.
Funnily enough we about 3/4 way into replacing the big ends on mine right now, on the drive, in the cold.
Missfires?
Inncorect plug gap as most poeple jus chuck em in.
Or, on S13 especially, coilpack fucked. They individual, one per plug, so easy to replace.
Down on power?
Probably got a standard exhaust and running under 1bar
Or to do with the missfire.
Or an air leak somewhere, poss from std recirc DV on S14/S14a (or import SR20 engined S13.
New front wing is no harder than any other car.

Ok, by sounds of its an S13.
Uk or import?
All UKs have CA18 1.8 engine, late spec imports have the SR20 (tho red-top non VVC one, unlike S14/14a/15, tho maybe had a conversion, not uncommon).
CAs and SRs have the same basic engine layout, tho look different.
If its a CA i bet the noise is fucked bigends, the miss etc is a coilpack, and the lack of grunt is cause they shit under about 4k even tho they got a diddy T25

Yea, then its a CA18 engined S13, common as muck, 1.8 16v turbo, bits cost fuck all, and good job too as most are shagged already
We doing the big-ends on mine right now, ill update the resto thread on that actually, no pics, but interesting reading

i think i know what it is and its not big ends.
it'll be blowing from the exhaust manifold, probably on either the 3rd or 4th cylinder. its a pain in the arse to get the manifold off as the water pipes are likely to brake and you need to piss about with spanners from underneath the car for the bottom nuts on the 3rd and 4th cylinders.
missfire is likely to be plug gaps like Steve says.
i'm just too good.

The tapping you might have a point, does same on Renault5Turbos.
Its not tooo hard to get the manifold off, and quicker to refit than remove.
And water pipes? Thats EASY, remove them and throw them in the bin like i did, job done
Get rid of the heated throttle while you at it.

Honestly, when exhaust manifolds blow slightly they can make a really bad tapping noise that sounds like a fucked top end.
No idea why, but ive seen it on R5GTTs too.
But its just as likely its mis-diagnosed and its the bottomend thats clonking like a cunt

not sure quite how, just a simple sound travels thingy i suppose. is it the sound of the lifters maybe?
i've had manifold gaskets go on 2 different S13's. with the 1st one, i was convinced it was the big ends or something. put my ear to the sump and still thought it was the big ends.
on the 2nd one, it was a car i was looking at. i told him it was the lifters shagged and got money off it.
the manifold explains why its sluggish too. i bet it builds boost late and slowly.

My manifold was blowing like a coont when i bought it, no tapping tho, just plain blowing, and trust me, tho it makes the power, youl have fuck all low down, no responce and sluggish.

was yours blowing on the manifold to turbo gasket? i had one blow there and it didn't tap. its the manifold to head gasket that tends to tap.
i'd recomend using genuine Nissan gaskets for the lot too. i used pattern parts once and they all blew. the genuine ones aren't too badly priced either.

You got gaskets between head and manifold, manifold and turbo, and turbo and elbow.
Bet its one of the first two, look on my resto thread for how fucked my turbo to manifold gasket was!
You NEED the head-manifold ones, but bin the others off, no need at all, and one less thing to blow once they gone.
Bren at Apex will have some gaskets in stock idve thought...
www.apexperformance.co.uk
Think he stocks genuine ones too, the ones i fitted were gen ones i think, cant remember, found em in the glovebox when i bought the car
And like said, no need for gaskets barring from head to manifold.
Pics of it all removed etc etc on my Resto thread

i didn't get a chance to turn the boost down before they took it. did i tell you it was RR'd at 271bhp?
i can't wait untill its all done, i'm thinking i should have chosen another colour for it.

the paint was amazing on it. i know its in good hands with the quality of that re-spray. can't work out why someone did all that on a 4 door E30 320
only thing that puts me off a colour change is i don't like cars that are one colour with an engine bay still in the original colour. it looks gay. i've painted an engine bay black before and its a pain in the arse to get everything done properly, maybe its worth the hassle though.
i'm going down there tomorrow hopefully, so if they haven't bought the paint already i might get them to change the colour. a nice lairy orange or yellow would be good.
